What do you  understand by a "gas offset" tariff (as in "All our Tariffs")?

That would be a carbon offset…

It's not obvious to me what Octopus gas tariff to "fix" on. I did look into Zog previously.  From what I can see it's hard to get any deal at 3 p or less. I suppose that you can combine an Octopus smart electricity tariff with any other gas tariff?

From this it would appear that statistically next month is the time to fix, which is my gut feel

Yes, you can pick any of the currently available tariffs for your gas...
As for when to fix, once you've decided to do that the right time is 'now', since if the price falls next month, you can just ask to be moved to the cheaper tariff, there are no penalties with Octopus fixed tariffs.
If that chart had any relevance to retail gas pricing we would already be cheaper than the prices in April this year which we are not...
You keep hunting for a magical accurate predictor of pricing and it just isn't out there to be found.

If there was such a thing then energy suppliers would not go out of business. The cost of energy is dynamic and ever changing depending on demand and the availability of supply. For example, does anyone know how much wind and solar power will be available on any given day? Any forecast becomes increasingly more inaccurate the further one looks ahead.

I've just switched away from tracker. Not going to sit around letting them charge me 4.2p/kwh for my gas (considering i've turned the heating back on in our great british summer!) Would have tolerated 3.5-3.7p but over 4 is just too much.

From my perspective i've moved to SO ENERGY on a 12 month fix.
My reasons behind this: They have the same unit rate and standing charge as octopus 12 month fix, but i used a referral code and will get £40 incentive upon switching, so it will bring the unit rate down (for my usage) to about 3p. The exit fee with them is only £5 so can easily move away if a better deal arises.
I've been with SO energy before in the past and had a delightful experience. (everything worked, no problems, customer service was decent)

There were cheaper tariffs with utility point and zog, (for some reason utility points 12 month fix doesn't appear on the price comparisons, or at least it doesn't appear with the accurate rate). The reason why I didn't go with them, was firstly they cant read smart meters yet and secondly if I did want to switch away their exit fee is £30, which then makes their discount negligible....(but more that i couldn't be bothered to give monthly readings again!!)

    Hope that helps.

... to where the grass is greener?
I keep an open mind on which supplier represents the least worst alternative taking all factors not just price into account. This is where these forums come into their own. To date my "formula" of Tracker tariff plus manual meter seems as good a compromise as any though perhaps not for ever.
I have tweeted Octopus that I am not impressed with their email response times (or responses at all).  Phoning definitely became progressively more difficult over the past few months though I have not tried again recently.

As the post above says, worth taking into consideration refer a friend credit incentives that are on offer, I jumped from Octopus tracker electricity via refer a friend link, My Electricity only switch to Igloo Energy completed on Saturday, will be getting £50 credit after 30 days variable rate of 15.72p kwh, even if price was to increase unlikely to exceed Octopus fixed rate before October, I am also free to switch around via other Electricity only refer a friend incentives that are widely available elsewhere online,
I have moved Gas to Octopus tracker for now as do not intend to use any Gas until October and am not able to get another So Energy or any other Gas only refer a friend referral sign up until near end of this year, Igloo Gas kwh rate is currently 2.73p kwh variable for dual fuel, even if the rate was to increase unlikely to go higher than Octopus 12 Month fixed rate before October, no exit fees

It looks like SO Energy have replaced their Birch gas tariff, which was quite attractive, with "Cherry" which is less so.
It looks like Igloo offers dual fuel only with their Pioneer variable tariff, not just gas.

I had intended to make use of the Referral Board but now understand that this has been withdrawn. Strange. Has it been replaced with something else?  And/or do the MSE rules still forbid quoting referral codes in threads such as these?

SO energy replace their tariffs regularly, like the other providers, once its gone its gone. Cherry is the best current offering from them.

Igloo like a lot of providers only do gas if you have electricity with them.

Yes the referral board is gone which is a shame, it hasn't been replaced. We are not allowed to post referral codes in threads as it is against forum rules.

Presumably via PM's to individual forumites to the rescue at decision time?  In present circs a referral could make the difference between switching and doing nothing.
