Errrr who? Puzzled now. What is "rad fem" and "liberal feminism" when they are at home?

In my book someone either regards themself as a person that just happens to have a female body OR they regard themselves as a "woman" and expect to be treated differently/thought of differently.

I'll go with the first. This time round - I have a female body - but I'm still (first and foremost) a person and expect to be treated as a person.

Plus side = I'm in the sex of body that has total control over whether to get pregnant or no - but men still don't have that option yet. May be another few years before they also have the total control women do. Society is less likely to try and put pressure on me to take part in its endless wars.

Minus side = Less physical strength and periods.

Now that would be an interesting read! :rotfl:

Rad Fem (Radical Feminism) and liberal feminism are factions within the feminist movement.

Your post actually touches on one of the biggest debates going on now - whether or not transgender actually exists. Rad fem says it doesn't and you're born male or female and that's that, whereas liberal feminism does argue for transgender rights.

(Obviously there'll be people within each group who disagree).
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Simplest explanations is that liberal feminism believes that women can pursue and maintain equality through their own choices, and that equality can won at a legal level by removing restrictions on what women are permitted to do (eg. front line combat operations in the military) and legislating against unequal social terms (eg. gender pay gap). Liberal feminism is based more around the actions of the individual, and removing shackles on that individual so that they can pursue their own ambitions.

Radical feminists believe that patriarchal societal attitudes are responsible for inequality, and seek a restructuring of society away from patriarchal models. They see patriarchal societal models as oppressive and a means to assert dominance over women, and some view men and women as separate classes within a class system of which the male class is unfairly ranked higher. Some radical feminists also assert that the patriarchal society defines a woman's "value" based on traits such as physical attractiveness.

    Thanks for explaining that.

Personally - I would explain "transgender" as being "Whoops - I made a mistake 9 months before I was born". My way of thinking is that we decide to be born again on Planet Earth (yep....that was my own personal Big Mistake about 60 years ago:(). Been regretting it - but making the best of it ever since.

At the time we decide to be born again - then we decide on the sex of the body we are going to inhabit this time (whether it be "I'll be born to Mr/Mrs A and have a female body" or be born to "Mr and Mrs B and have a male body").

Just as some of us make a mistake having been born again in the first place - but decide to grit our teeth/make the best of it/stick it out and never make the same mistake again and meanwhile at least try and turn it round into being a "learning experience". Then there are people who dont regret that - but do regret the sex of the body they get this time round and wish they had chosen the opposite sex body instead.

Hence - I sympathise with transgender people and regard them in a similar light as those of us who made a mistake choosing to come back to Earth at all. The difference is some of them decide to alter their body to match - whereas those of us who made a mistake being born in the first place just have to grit teeth and tell ourselves not to make a similar mistake again <shrugs smilie>

Therein lies another hierarchy.. they first of all earn the title Dr, which is gender neutral, and then if/when they progress to consultant level they become Mr (or Miss/Mrs), marking the gender difference again.

Only if they're surgeons, Physicians remain as doctors. And it happens on completion of membership exams rather than when they become consultants. Plus it's optional.

It goes back to when Surgeons were "Barber Surgeons" and not considered gentlemanly enough to earn the title of doctor.

What does a big lavish wedding have to do with what title a woman uses when married? I don't think fancy dresses and venues come with a contract you have to sign saying you'll use 'Mrs'.

The woman who enjoy the lavish weddings and venues usually also like to make a point of now being "Mrs -HusbandsName" after the ceremony. Just like wearing an expansive ring to show your married a lot of woman also enjoy being called Mrs to show they are married.

It's a bit of a contradiction to get married in front of a large group of people, put pictures online and announce it in the newspaper then not want a title that tells people if you are married or not.

But like I said earier I never assume martial status by just a title just because I know of good examples of people who are not married using Mrs.

    Yes.

    Why wouldnt I?

I know it's not that usual to think that way in a country that doesnt (on the whole) believe in reincarnation.

    But...yep....I do.

Why? Men don't change their title to show the world they are married.

I can't say it would bother me. We can't control what others think of us - if someone wants to assume I'm gay because I use the honorific Ms (or because I'm wearing dungarees and Doc Martin boots - as has happened to me), there's nothing I can do about that and, unless they decide to tell me that's what they think, I may never know.
    )

Exactly. :) Apparently some people assume you're a lesbian if you wear Birkenstocks too (so I've read!), but it doesn't stop me virtually living in them during the Summer months! I also love Docs too but haven't worn them for a while.
