Is this right or legal

Hi just looking for a bit of advice really.
We rent our cottage it is one of two , an old lady lives next door .
Last year our landlord decided to have a biomass system installed and that as our nextdoor neighbour was allowing to be installed in her old container, we would pay the electric to run the system.
We were told and in writing that the cost of running this was as much a running a light bulb as it was soo energy efficient etc etc.
Well it isn't, it costs us double than what is cost us before and more expensive than oil.
I had a word with the LL and he said he wasn't doing anything about it !!
He also told her to run he heating non stop so he would get more payments which means her opening windows in midwinter and she still complains of being cold.
Im getting really miffed, would love to move but have 4 dogs and no one will allow us to have that many, even though they are good as gold, don't bark or make a mess and we do pay £225 more rent a month than the lady next door.
I would like to have your views on this , good or bad . Thankyou

    Seems like you don't have a choice if you want to keep the four dogs. Doesn't matter if you think it's right or not.

    If she's cold, why is she opening windows...? Run the heating when you want it, set to the temperature you want it.

    But you have to accept that you have made the choice to have a large number of pets, and that that will have an effect on the housing choices you have. If that means you can't find better value or quality accommodation than you are currently in, then that's solely because of the choices you have made.

    Yes it would be easy to get rid of the dogs, but that wont be happening lol
    She opens the windows because she isn't cold , its because he promised her more radiators and didn't come up with the goods , when she moved in 15 years ago her and her husband put in radiators at there own cost and did not put any in the kitchen and bathroom and when this system was installed it was to be done, but her ran out of money...she can be a strange woman at times.




    But is it legal to run two houses off one system. does anyone know ?

    I'm a bit confused as to what is happening here, but...

    1. Have you written to the Landlord formally?

    2. Can't you just turn it off? Even if you need to remove a fuse to do so, I'd be tempted if it was doubling my electric bill. I very much doubt the landlord can oblige you to run whatever it is that costs so much.

    With the dogs, look for suitable properties and then invite the landlord to your current place to see how they are?

    Why does it make any difference?
    if it is legal then you put up with it or move out.
    If it isn't legal then you put up with it, kick off and get evicted, or move out.
  • ...and I'm confused as to why you are paying more rent than her (ie quite a bit more rent at that). Is your house much bigger and better than hers?

    Fine. But you DO need to accept, then, that it is that choice you are making which is limiting your search for other accommodation.

    And, yes, it is perfectly legal for properties to share heating. Plenty of blocks of flats and even estates of houses share area heating systems.

    You are aware that you can turn individual radiators up and down, right?

    We are paying more rent because that's what he wants to charge , he got the idea from our last property as we were paying the same rent there ( had to move because LL was selling up ).
    I think we will look at moving and find a better LL, one who will accept dogs (will get new ll to visit property to see how good the dogs are )
    Getting dogs rehomed is not an option, they are my only family that I have and have never let me down unlike other people have in the past LL knows this.
    No havnt put it in writing , but he would not acknowledge it anyway.
    But will start looking for other places now

    The landlord cannot insist you run the heating more. Presumably, apart from the electric, you share the fuel costs which will also make the neighbors bills higher. Are they concerned about the cost?.

    Do you think this makes sense to other people?
