I use stevia powder as a sweeter for my tea. Is this popular in the UK?

I too use the Truvia brand of stevia. But take a look at this article.

Can't believe I'm on day 15 and not missing sugar at all! I did exercise yesterday after all, and felt miles better afterwards. In fact I feel like doing a lot more today. Not having sweetie temptations in the house when I'm vulnerable has really helped too. But I am now starting to feel a bit in the skinny side.milasavesmoney wrote: »I'm thinking dried apricot as I have some very dry ones in the pantry.
I've got lots of dried fruit and will use it up in baking instead of sugar should a craving hit. I'd like to replicate flapjack without the syrup....any ideas how to bind the mixture together? Otherwise I'll end up with a granolaValue-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

They can always be brought back to life with a splash of boiling water and a quick whizz in the microwave. Try it the next time you make a cup of tea!

I make a raw type using coconut oil. No baking you just set the mixture in the fridge afterwards.£36/£240

I am thinking I could make a squidgy binder from dates, but it defeats the point to an extent!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Obviously if you're looking for completely free of all sugars then you probably need to look at savoury flapjacks.

I'm actually under drs orders to add salt to my food - I tend to faint and my heart can stop (really slow down) if I don't.
I get lectured (not by you) by the health brigade at work about how bad salt is for me.
Salt is required by out bodies to function and lots of people collapse during the summer every year because they cut down on salt (salads) and don't rehydrate their electrolytes - resulting in heat stroke.
Balance in everything.
I'm cutting (or trying to) processed foods (added sugar) - not all sugar, not carbs, and not any other element of my diet.
Well i'm sure glad I read this. I eat no processed food except chocolate and I do have white sugar. I never add any salt to my food or cooking so I never have any salt.
Recently i've been feeling pretty crap to be honest. I've been having cramps in my legs in the night, my joints ache and now i've started with really dry eyes, so bad in fact that i've had to put eye drops in before I open my eyes in a morning.
This morning I felt so ill, shaky and faint. I sat reading MSE whilst drinking my homemade smoothie and read your comment and I wondered if it was lack of salt making me ill. So I had a quick Google and found the dangers of low salt, especially for people like me with low blood pressure.
I chucked a quarter teaspoon of salt in my smoothie and will have some more on my vegetables at tea time.
Thank you so much for mentioning this! I do believe its why i'm feeling ill when I eat healthily! :T0 -
Re the fruit loaf - I weighed it. It's 8oz of both flour and sugar. Though i use a mug, and no sugar as i said.
Date and Banana sugar free flapjacks - from Mumsnet.
1 tsp vanilla essence
80ml vegetable oil
180g oats
175g dates, chopped
2 bananas, sliced
Method
Mash the bananas in a large bowl.
Add the dates and oil to the bananas and mix together.
Stir in the oats and the vanilla essence and
leave for 5 mins, so the oats absorb the oil.
Spoon the mixture into a well greased baking tray and bake at 175C/Gas Mark 5 for about 25 minutes.
Serve.
Raw "naked" bars - Mrs LurcherWalkers recipe
5 oz pitted dried dates
3 oz raw cashew nuts (pieces are fine)
2 oz seedless raisins / dried cherries
0.5 oz cocoa powder
2 teaspoons honey
Squidge it all together in a food processor - you may have to finish the squidging by hand.. Make into a sausage, wrap in cling film and keep in the fridge. it's very addictive.
Finally banana "ice cream"
Freeze a banana - it's easier to deal with the frozen banana if you have taken the skin off first.
Take out the freezer and leave for a very short time to soften. Then use a hand blender till it has the consistency of ice cream. You can add peanut butter, cocoa or vanilla but the banana alone is rather good.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
i use honey when i need to sweeten something plus its got anti bacterial properties
I too am an advocate of honey I use it if I'm stewing fruit, rhubarb etc.I haven't got a sweet tooth at all, and apart from caster sugar that I use for making my DGS cakes and biscuits with I can't remember the last time I bought 2lb of sugar I think it was back in the late 1960s when was 1/8d for a 2 lb bag (9p) I am not keen on processed food either and prefer to make stuff if I can from scratch. No one in my immediate family take sugar and my two DDs grew up not having it on cereal or in tea/coffee etc.
But give me a piece of blue cheese and a couple of crackers and I'm in heaven :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I am definitely a cheese monster and have to watch carefully my intake0 -

I think, if you reduce it gradually over time, most people can cut their salt very low without it being dangerous - but some is still needed.
You might want to chat with your doctor if you get a chance - ask for a blood test perhaps?
Personally - I can't cut my salt as my body is a bit broken (not just my mind) as I have an endocrine issue that means my body can't balance salt and potassium without a little help. That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.
