  • If the majority of the students are using their connection and are sucking it all away with watching TV or downloading films or something, the uni still manages to give everyone the same speed? It doesn't slow down at all?

Don't you start... I get that from people who drop round unexpectedly.... "you don't have any tea.... or any milk ... or any sugar".
No. I don't use them. Why would I buy them?
Yes, but this is your MUM we're talking about, you were expecting her, she's come to pick you up at the end of term, and she's desperate for a cup of tea or coffee before she drives you home again. :rotfl:

You could at least train your housemates to have a little bit of milk in the fridge and not mind your MUM having some for her cup of tea ... :rotfl:

I don't ask for a lot. I don't expect him to have finished (or even started!) packing. I just want a cup of tea or coffee!

    apologies for being OT.

I have done speed tests and random times and yes you get the same. Also the nerds like to whine that at 3am when they are up they do not get more bandwidth or speed!

i think you're being pretty tolerant there.... i was picked up at the end of term once and hadn't started packing.... the reaction from my mum meant i never ever did that again! after that i was always all packed and ready to put it in the car as soon as she arrived!!! (and i did always have stuff for tea - but mainly because i wouldn't function without it rather than thinking of her!)

  • internet?? we didn't even get an ariel point!

wouldn't have mattered anyway, i couldn't afford a laptop or a tv - my loan went on alcohol & holidays :D

plus it was way more sociable to go to the tv rooms or the 24hr computer labs anyway :)

  • Storthers hall in huddersfield was bout £130 for internet or you could get it with your room if you got as premium room- but the internet connection was absolutely appauling. It was always cutting off and was unbelievably slow- everyone on campus complained yet they still did nothing about it. was very annoying. As for TV liscence- i managed to gert away withiut buying one for my 1st year in halls- i know i shouldnt have but i was told but security on site that they didnt let the tv liscensing ppl into the halls anyway so i saved my money :D im not condoning it though- i was probably just reli lucky :D

Well your uni must be spending a hell of a lot of money on that, or charging you a lot for rent. The largest halls at my university houses 1150 students, but in the smaller ones the internet connection is faster.
  • 55 a week mate including net connection! I am 25 min walk away from manchester max. All bills included and a secure but quite old site.

Its not the most complicated thing to bandwidth limit (upstream or downstream) each individual computer.

In our uni, our upstream was locked 40kbps. Makes it useless for anything except browsing.

Downloading was uncapped, so you could still download big files.

So the speeds that we got were very reliable (although they were not very good as the campus had expanded and everyone was plugged into the same connection - both the office buildings, inter-campus VOIP, student halls in both campuses were all on the same pipe).
  • Just done a speed test 985 kb/s down and 487kb/s up! Well its good enough for me ;)
