Internet in Halls

Options
Read the small print, or rather read between the lines. Many Halls are advertised as having internet connection or a data point in rooms, commonly they don't tell you payment is required to connect your PC/laptop.
It's likely to be around £100, so budget accordingly or be prepared to wait until your loan comes through. (Mini rant - this is generating huge amounts of income for unis, DD's Hall alone has the potential to earn the uni over £14,000 pa, total campus over £100,00 pa)
Also check if you have a TV ariel point. Many older halls don't and reception can be poor or impossible in rooms on lower floors facing courtyards or where transmitter signals are blocked by surrounding buildings.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

  • It's not always that way though. At Warwick for example it's all included in the room cost in every room on campus, the only thing you need is an ethernet cable (take one with you - you'll get straight online and save a bit of cash). From my own and my friend's experiences don't think this is that wide spread. It should tell you on the University's website as well.

We also had a ariel socket in every kitchen, besides you don't want a TV in your room - too antisocial, and you need a seperate licence!

As long as your mother doesn't plug the 'out' end of the ethernet cable into the wrong socket on the wall. :o :rotfl:

(Look, I was trying to help, and anyway, why were there TWO sockets it would fit into in the first place?)

I have NO idea, but apparently that was what I'd done. At least that's what he told me when he did get it working.

Maybe there were two CAT 5 sockets but only one was live?

I'd ask him but he's still in bed ...

  • Included in the room price here but be aware of television license fee's.

No need when you can use your PC/Laptop as a TV anyway.

(Search Google for All TV stations on your computer)

Got a threatening letter saying the TV license company would visit me as i claimed i did not have a TV.

    Is it that unbelievable?

He's up now. Apparently it wasn't the 'out' end, it was the computer end, and there were two almost but not quite identical sockets, and I chose the wrong one. These things ought to be idiot-proof.

Like I said, I was only trying to help, which after packing the car, driving him up there and helping him unload was, I think, over and above the call of duty anyway, especially as he doesn't drink tea or coffee himself and sees no need to keep any to offer his friends, or even his devoted mother!

Perhaps I should start a thread on whether it's reasonable to expect your mum to bring her own tea bags and milk if she wants a cuppa when she drops you off or picks you up ... :rotfl:

you should really still pay the license however you are receiving tv. whilst i think the rules of tv licensing are awful, i don't think it's a good idea to encourage people to do something that could land them with a huge fine.

Also, don't get your TV license until after October 1st then you can claim back the three unused summer months (July, August, September).

So don't have TV during Freshers week

    Good point ^

    This is interesting:

The law requires everyone, including students, to be covered by a licence if they use any device to receive television programmes as they're being shown on TV. This includes any TV set, DVD or video recorder, digital box, PC, laptop or mobile phone.

(If you use a digital box with a music system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.)spacer.gif

Pre-recorded is ok then, All tv stations has programmes worldwide.

English TV isn't really up to par with my interests.
