I probably didn't need a tv license in my first year, since the majority of the time, I watched tv with my house mates.0

Is free in Queen Mary University Halls in London. No aerial points, but most rooms can get freeview reception with boosted indoor antennas.
I see no reason to not charge them. The personal usage of students can absolutely swamp the uni networks. In my uni, from one single halls alone, 70% of the available bandwidth for the whole uni was being used up. This was reduced once they stopped P2P traffic, and throttled speeds to individual computers.
But because of the hige usage, I see no reason why having to pay for internet access in unfair. If you were living anywhere else, you damn well wont get free internet access.0 -
halls in salford has internet included in the cost!Who needs a sig!!! :rotfl:0

There's been a trend towards including internet in hall fees now, as it becomes more and more essential to have it in your room.
Mine (Nottingham) charged £70/year the first year I was there, but since then its been included in hall fees0 -
Mine came within my rent0

Portsmouth University I believe a standard connection is included. You can then pay to increase your connection speed.0

My point was not that you have to pay, as such. Just that you cannot assume that it is included in Hall fees. Those of you who have "free" access can bet it is factored into your costs already. But it's a bit much to turn up and have an extra cost to bear without warning.
Many uni networks monitor usage and downloading /P2P functions are throttled or picked up and warnings issued. Some deny access to certain sites aimed at downloads."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -

At Warwick for example it's all included in the room cost in every room on campus, the only thing you need is an ethernet cable (take one with you - you'll get straight online and save a bit of cash). From my own and my friend's experiences don't think this is that wide spread. It should tell you on the University's website as well.
We also had a ariel socket in every kitchen, besides you don't want a TV in your room - too antisocial, and you need a seperate licence!

Its the same at Scarborough - you don't need to pay anything extra.0
