  • At my halls of residence, it costs £150 for 42 weeks of internet access.
Thats loads =[ What student has that kind of money!

There is a socket in my room, you know, theoretically like, would it work if i brought my own ethernet cable and plugged it in? And would they have any way of knowing wether that socket was being used?

    most likely no and yes!

you don't have to have it - most universities have free wireless or computer clusters in departments and libraries and it is possible to go without. you may want it and it may be more convenient, but there are a lot of us who went through uni recently (within the last 5/7 years) who didn't even have a PC. had to use shared facilities. not always ideal but couldn't afford the computer so had to lump it!

£150 isn't actually that much of a rip off - for the equivalent with BT, you have to pay about £184 (although you couldn't just pay for 42 weeks of the year either!). i know it's expensive, but that what life away from parents is like. it's £3.57 a week for you - that's about 2 pints in a student bar - most students manage to afford that each week!

At my uni you had to register your room number and MAC code in order to get it to work.

It took me forever to do it as well as it told me somebody was already using my MAC code. Which isn't supposed to happen, guess it can when you order a fairly cheap computer! However eventually managed to change my MAC code and it worked but not after a lot of frustration!
  • I'd imagine they'll definitely be able to tell if a internet socket is being used! For your computer to connect at all they need to issue you with an IP address. And most unis seem to have ways of monitoring traffic, e.g. bittorrent etc. If they can issue you with a warning/fine for downloading too much they must first know who you are!

From my experience the majority of University owned accommodation include internet for free....

But privately owned halls ie Unite charge ridiculous amounts! http://www.u-want.com/internet_packages.html

    It's £3.49 A WEEK! for 512kb connection
and £6.49 A WEEK for 2MB Connections! working out at around £24 a month on an average tenency length

£12 connection fee on top (involves the complex process of staff in the halls office ticking a box and printing out your username/password... very sophisticated stuff!)

They have added a online tv feature showing some freeview channels this yr but its still excessive for a 2MB connection.

    Definite money spinner for them!
    SLC: £13000+

    Quidco

    131.24 (paid) + £0 (validated) = £131.24
    Valued Opinions
    : £75 (paid) + £52.30 (received) + £4.50 (pending) = £131.80
    StudentPanel: £25

Perhaps I should start a thread on whether it's reasonable to expect your mum to bring her own tea bags and milk if she wants a cuppa when she drops you off or picks you up ... :rotfl:
Don't you start... I get that from people who drop round unexpectedly.... "you don't have any tea.... or any milk ... or any sugar".
No. I don't use them. Why would I buy them?
  • One thing to be mindful of whilst using the 'net in halls is that the vast majority of students will be using the connection at the same time and there will probably be a fair few who are file-sharing or watching TV or some other activity which will cause your internet connection to ground to an effective halt.
