Sharing hotel room with co-worker

I would refuse point blank to share a room with somebody I barely know. Working with somebody isn't the same as really knowing them. To be honest, I wouldn't even be comfortable sharing a room with somebody from work who I do know well. I value my privacy and space - always have.

    Me too.

I just wouldnt and my suspicion would be that the employer is refusing to accept OP's offer of paying half the companys cost themselves in the hope that OP (and others who feel the same) will go ahead and cover ALL the company's hotel bill (ie by booking and paying for total cost of a room themselves). Sneaky or what.....?

I can't believe a company would seriously consider putting themselves at risk that way (ie this attempt to get people to share rooms)! The company would be the ones getting the fallout heading in their direction if:

    - the sharer "makes a move" on OP and that cant be ruled out just by virtue of the fact that the sharer would be the same sex (presumably). I'm heterosexual - but would refuse to share a room with another woman just-in-case they weren't.

    - the sharer could be a snorer (or maybe OP snores). Cue for disrupted nights sleep for at least one of them.

    - the sharer could be a thief or at least nosy enough to go through OP's belongings. I'd hate to have to count the money in my purse every night before putting my handbag down and then count it again first thing next morning just to check it was all still there OR to have all the hassle with my employer trying to argue the toss if I found some of it had gone missing overnight.

I think it's the thought of possible theft that would worry me most personally - although I would indeed be someone that would turn round afterwards and tell my employer "My purse was £20 short overnight and you need to sack my fellow employee and pay me back the stolen money".

Just wow. I just do not share, I am very bad at sharing. I barely tolerate sharing with my wife in bed, but point blank do not share with strangers, or even friends.

I'd never survive at your place - yes, I'd hand in my notice at the meeting where I was told I would have to share without any options.

I am sorry but I completely misread the above and did not see the word "with". Made it a whole new message :rotfl:

I was booked into a twin room, years ago, on a training course. The fashionable young thing I was sharing with set her alarm for 6.30am and spent an hour and a half every morning on her beauty routine, including ages with a hair dryer. A nightmare!
  • One of the directors at my company tried to suggest this for a trade show when a large group of us would be attending for 5 nights...but only for staff members - directors were to be exempt. They soon changed their mind when a few of us "junior" employees said we were not going to go and the directors could man the trade show on their own.

A quick word with HR talking about sexual harassment, privacy and some vague personal medical issues will soon make them change their minds on this policy.

I've had this issue in the past but thought it went out in the '90s

For a company sales conference there were fewer rooms in the hotel (Grand Brighton) than people so we were asked to submit people to share with - once they realised most responses featured members of senior management, opposite sex or Cameron Diaz they abandoned the idea and rearranged the date to allow rooms in other local hotels.

The following years conference was at Centerparcs - seem to remember we were in 4 room/single bathroom chalets which caused some nasal/aural 'fun' the morning after

In the OP's case I'd be challenging en-masse

Oh I couldn't!! I've always had my own room when I've stayed away for work. Hotel rooms can be quite small when there's a couple of you having to get dressed smartly for a conference.

One time my colleagues and I had to go abroad for 2 nights, we asked our boss if he wouldn't mind arranging flights back for the Saturday rather than the Friday so we could have a day and extra night in the country. He agreed as this worked out cheaper. He did say we had to pay for the extra night which was fair enough. Turns out the hotel was cheaper than he would usually pay so he offered to pay for he extra night after all. Sweet!!

I doubt anything seriously bad would happen - this setup is pretty common on sleeper trains and I'm sure they would've changed it if it was a common thing! More likely are problems like snoring etc which are annoying, but it's your work your employer is paying for that would suffer so... If you're not comfortable, ask the person you'd be sharing with to go halves on the cost of an extra room?

The only time in 35 years of working and regular travel that this has been suggested was when I was working on a remote island and there were not enough rooms for everyone on the island. Fortunately someone else cancelled their trip so we had the luxury of our own rooms.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

Depends if you are a valued skilled worker or a lacky.
If you are a lacky who can not get another job easily you have to suck things up and know your place in life.
If you are a skilled valued worker then you can refuse, if they throw one, walk out and simply get another job.
I do Contracts, all day every day.
