I will continue to put into context the bias and vested interest of some posters who refuse to accept the fact that their profession is responsible for many of the problems with the sales of financial services product

You are the only one on this site that promotes the use of CMCs. Your bias is amazing considering this is a consumer site.

The OP was asking if there was any form of review site and as always it descended into name calling and insults instead of any form of reasoned discussion. I was merely highlighting that some of the posting on here comes from people with a vested interest in financial services and it is hardly a blameless profession on which to pronounce judgement
    So, in a word, nothing.

If you want to slag off financial services businesses then, subject to forum rules, you are of course entitled to start your own thread.

That was not the OP's purpose in starting this one, though.

CMCs use template letters, which they submit to the banks. Some of them don't amend anything in the template other than the customer's name, address and account number.

The Financial Ombudsman Service has a questionnaire on its website (also available from the banks themselves) that you can fill in with some further information. Some CMCs (such as Gladstone Brookes) attach the questionnaire to the complaint, allowing you to include a bit more information with your complaint. I would advise using a CMC that lets you do this.

In the complaint letter some CMCs include wording asking the bank to investigate all accounts, not just the one quoted in the letter, which is helpful if you may have had several loans in the past and can't remember all the account numbers. I'd recommend using one that has this wording in the complaint. (e.g. The Claims Guys have this wording, and also put a PPI questionnaire in there)

Of course, the logical conclusion of my recommendation to include a FOS PPI questionaire and also ask for all accounts to be investigated is just to send it in yourself however if you are dead set on using a CMC I would advise asking a couple of CMCs if you can see their generic template letters (I don't know if they'll let you)

I don't think it would be possible to review CMCs, because they do so little work for their money that you could not possibly assess their service on any decent basis (beyond trivial things like being polite on the phone). After all, if all they do is send a generic complaint letter to a bank and then claim 25%+ of the money, how can you do that well, or badly?

Thanks to magpiecotta for their helpful reply. Some of us are too ill to do all the admin ourselves.

You’re kidding right... both this thread and magpiecotta have been inactive since 2016.

The reality is that you will do MORE admin utilising a claims management company... you will need to provide all the same information you would to your lender and in the same format.

In addition their scattergun approach with complaint points will only harm/hinder your complaint.

In that case, you are far too ill to use a claims company.

For the sake of your health, as well as your wallet, don't go near them.

You really don't get it. Claims Companies don't take on the "admin" of a complaint, they simply offer to "represent" the complainant by posting the complaint on their behalf. No matter how ill you are, you'll still have to fill in the same FOS complaint form (or the firm's version of it) that you would if you were complaining alone.

So potentially save yourself a large proportion of any redress you might win by doing it yourself.

As to this thread, it was part of a long-running feud between several posters which eventually led to them no longer being allowed to post here. Taken in that context, you might understand that you thanking "Magpiecottage" for his contribution is somewhat misplaced three years after he last posted.
  • Learn't the hard way by using Reclaimppi.co.uk but at least their fee was only 10% Plus VAT. One of the many companies they searched was Barclays for a credit card but actually found I had ppi on a Barclays mortgage that I was able to claim back. I had completely forgotten about the old mortgage so in this case using a claims company worked for me. I've gone solo on claiming around ppi on my current mortgage provider for over 20 years of ppi using the arguments used by the claims company as a guide.

i'm sorry to break it to you, but they didn't 'find' anything - they asked barclays what PPI you had and Barclays found it, the same as if you'd have asked them.
    helpful tips
    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y

I can't believe some of the nasty, ableist comments on this thread. Really you should know better than trying to judge folk who aren't like you.
I tried doing it myself but it was hopeless - I have severe adhd, so doing anything like this is like pushing water uphill for me. I pay for help for things like this where I need to - eg some household chores that I can't manage, also an accountant because I cannot manage doing my tax alone either. I ended up forgetting who I'd sent letters to and forgot then to write back in time. A friend recommended a company to me. Everything is done by phone interview, I've not had to write anything out or do any work at all, only sign the letters they send to me. The first letters that are send out are standard letters as you say. They have found six lots of PPI so far, waiting to hear about another six. The letters they send out in the second stage are not standard letters, I know as I just signed some, they were based on phone interviews that I did with the PPI firm.
So yeah, they take 25% , but for me it is the difference between getting something and nothing at all - I don't have the focus for it, I'm happy to pay the PPI firm, just the same as I'm happy to pay for the accountant that other people tell me I don't need to employ. So please don't judge those of us who need help by your standards. Some of us do need this, I have two friends who haven't done their PPI yet as they are both too ill to do it by themselves, they both say they are going to use a company and will need to find some decent information somewhere, so it would be helpful if this thread was somewhere folk in this situation could get impartial advice. I mean even Martin himself says this, some people (i.e. me) would do better through a firm.
And telling people they are too ill and should leave it alone - really, it is so insensitive and you aren't helping - if you're on DLA as my friends are, a windfall would be helpful for sure.
