Money Moral Dilemma: How big a tip should I give when using a 2 for 1 voucher?

I find it hard to believe that anyone would refuse to tip "on principle" - more likely, the people who do so are just tightwads who will seize any opportunity not to pay more than the minimum required. The defensiveness of some of the responses on here suggests that they know this in their hearts.
I waitressed for years as a student, often (but not always) receiving generous tips, and now I am in a position where I can afford to eat out regularly, I pay it forward by leaving a tip myself!
Everyone knows this is how the restaurant industry works. If the service you have received is that dreadful, you should have a word with the restaurant manager - but 9 times out of 10 I suspect people are just looking for excuses not to put their hand in their pocket.0 -

Yeah but just because it "how the restaurant industry works" then why should everyone follow like sheep and just do it!. Just think 100 years ago women had less rights than men and were expected to do the cooking and cleaning while men when out to work because "thats just how it worked". So imagine if nobody challenged that idea and just accepted it forever! (obviously leaving tips is nowhere near as important as that issue but its a good example).
In restaurants they earn at least the minimum wage just like every other work in the country. So why do they deserve tips and other staff such as in hospitals don't?.
I've asked this to every other poster bu they can't give me a good reply... It should be the employers responsibility to pay their staff, so why in the restaurant industry should they expect extra payment from customers?.
"I like to follow the group and am scared of challenging anything that a majority consider normal" is not a good response!0 -
We just returned from Mallorca after a seven night stay. All the meals were included so were very affordable. The service was exceptional. I asked about tips and the guy at the restaurant told me they split the tips twice a month between the kitchen and waiting staff. There was a tin by the entrance and you could give or not. No-one was looking for anything. All the staff were great so I put EUR 70 in the tin. EUR 10 per night seemed very fair. You need to decide for yourself what or if you are going to give anything. Exceptional service deserves to be acknowledged.0

Actually I too because I suspect I look like that sort of person that wouldn't tip, I.e. A tightwad, cheapskate. I don't wear designer clothes, drive an old car and generally am quite hard up, but it gives me a kick to see the look on the face of the staff when I leave £1 on top of a £4 coffee and cake bill.
Choose not to tip, that's your choice, don't diss those that do. I've been a waitress, kitchen hand, barmaid, in store restaurant worker (and it may not take brain power but it sure is hard work, so those that think it's an easy ride should try it). And yes the cleaner also works hard but in places I've worked, good staff who get tipped look after the cleaners at birthdays and holiday times, so this is just another excuse for not tipping, not a reason.
Don't tip at Fast food? I spoke to a worker once stood outside to keep the drive through moving, she told me about a customer who paid for a coffee to keep her hands warm, (I gave her my gloves, she looked frozen), perhaps it's non tippers who are out of synch, not the tippers.
Yes I'm skint but I'm not desperate and I know being generous doesn't get you any further in life, but actually I don't care, I can't make much difference to the world, but I can make a difference to that persons world.Debt -it's a fight that I'm winning, dealing with debt one day at a time.
