If the food was mind blowingly good, sure the tip should be to the chef instead of the waitress?

I never tip because I think it is a stupid and awkward concept.

Other countries like Japan do not have any tipping and it is such a great relief. One less thing to think/worry about.

Customers pay for the food. Restaurants pay the staff. This way is much cleaner and simpler.

Everytime I leave without tipping, I am 'voting' for the abolishment of this system before it spreads like a virus into other areas and we have to tip all and sundry.

Wow, there are a lot of cheapskates on here. Read that bill... 'service not included'. Whether you like it or not that's the way it is. If you don't like it don't eat in restaurants. If you can't afford it don't eat in the restaurant.

My normal tip for good service is 15%. If the service has been average then 10%. I cannot remember the last time I didn't leave a tip.

As for the voucher question, obviously you pay a tip based on the full value of the meal. The voucher is just the way to are paying for it. You don't change your tip based on whether you pay by cash or card so why change it based on paying with a voucher.

mameha... do you explain to your servers that they are going to have to pay for your selfish views?

We always give 10% of the total bill regardless of vouchers or not - unless the service has been bad. Then we downgrade according to how bad. We haven't given more than 10% as we feel the food and service would have to be truly exceptional for that to happen - and it never has been!

Do you always overpay for goods and services by 10% or is it just in restaurants?. If just restaurants then why?.

Not many restaurants that I go to have this on the bill. But if they do then it's their choice not to set a price for the service. I don't pay more than I need to for other goods or services so why would I in restaurants!.

They are getting paid by their employer either way so in reality service is included because the restaurant arnt going to make a loss if they receive no tips!.

When I've been out with a group of people I have actually taken a percentage off the bill because the service was poor and the food even worse!.

I'm with BaldCol in that I always tip around 15%, reducing this if necessary because of poor service. I live on a restricted income so don't get to eat out often, but I don't see why poorly paid waiting staff should have to suffer because of my problems.

The staff take care of us and have to be polite and friendly no matter how many people they have to serve or what problems their customers present. The 2for1 voucher makes no difference to this, you tip based on the initial cost before any discount. As another contributor has said, the staff aren't party to the discount scheme so why should they be penalised?

I'm rather struck by how many people are on this thread just to complain about it and, worse, to attack the OP. Don't you nice people have anything better to do?

But they are all getting paid at least minimum wage and if they want to earn more money they can learn new skills and get a better job!. At the end of the day it's a low skilled job which anyone can do, so minimum wage is a fair pay!.
  • I never tip at all. They are paid to do a job so why should they expect extra for doing it.
In all my working life I never received a tip for doing my job, I received a salary !!
I know they are not highly paid, but why should I make up their wages, whether its a meal, hairdressing etc these things are expensive enough.
This is the only factor preventing me from going on a cruise the exorbitant tips that are compulsary !!
I reckon most people only tip because they feel compelled to and do not want to appear miserly.

On a serious note, just our of curiosity - how do people feel about tipping fast food delivery people and cab drivers?

    - Had a conversation about this with a friend the other day and I'd love to know to know if people do it

I am totally against it. They get paid to do a job, so why should they expect extra for doing it. I don't get a tip for doing my job, nor do I expect one,
