I would stop stressing about it and avoid tipping unless you want to. Everyone gets paid minimum wage in this country so unlike in America I really don't understand the obsession with tipping. I have occasionally tipped if I get amazing service and that person has brightened up my day, but I generally think it's quite strange that we feel the need to give an extra wage to this one category of many minimum wage workers.

The tip should always be on any pre-voucher cost.

Whether you give 10% or a different percentage, or no tip at all, is of course up to personal choice and the quality of the service.
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)

On a serious note, just our of curiosity - how do people feel about tipping fast food delivery people and cab drivers?

    - Had a conversation about this with a friend the other day and I'd love to know to know if people do it
  • My son in law has worked as a waiter and he usually tips 15%. Restaurant staff are low paid and rely on tips. The tips are usually shared between the waiters and kitchen staff, so your waiter won't keep the full amount.
I an a bit meaner so I usually tip 10%. On the pre voucher amount but perhaps excluding OTT markups on alcohol. I give myself a silent pep talk that I can afford it, to make myself leave the money on the table and not slip it back into my pocket. I always leave cash tips, so I don't have the bother of asking if the staff receive it or not.

    Still no.

On the very rare occasion that I take a cab, I take a pre-booked one and will agree a price first and ensure I have the exact amount of money (none of the BS from the cabbie saying they don't have change!).

With take away delivery a lot accept online orders and payment.

I find the culture of tipping a bit confusing and outrageous. At a hotel the porter usually does not give you a chance to carry your bags yourself and why would you tip the porter but not the concierge who may have been more helpful?

It is easier to not tip at all. Waiters may get low pay but it should not be down to the customer to subsidise this.

When I worked as a waitress as a student, the tips went to management or full time staff only. You may have been served by a really fantastic person but usually the tip is a shared common pot.
  • It's hard enough earning the money so the last thing i'm going to do is give it away to someone who's already been paid to do the job.Unless the food and service has been exceptional, can't remember the last time this happened. It's as though a tip is expected, people should speak up more. Many times we've been out and service charge or whatever else they want to call it is added to the bill and i've refused to pay it,make a noise, cause a fuss, they soon scrub it off the bill.Cruise ships are one of the biggest culprits for this.As for your dillema, the fact that half price vouchers are involved tells me that quality food isn't.......so don't.

More often than not when I eat in restaurants, the service charge is already added to the bill.

Has anyone ever asked for this to be removed? and were you questioned for it?

I've asked for it to be removed once due to really bad service and they didn't hesitate to remove it. But apart from that I would feel a bit awkward asking to remove the service charge if the service was ok or good.

I don't think the fact that you have a voucher should influence your decision whether to tip or not. As previous replies have said, you give a tip to your waiter/ress if they have given you good service. I would tip if the waiter/ress had been friendly and chatty, and I would give the tip to him/her direct and not add it to a card payment. I worked in a restaurant where, at the end of the shift, all the tips would be put into a pot and then shared out - no problem with this, except the owner also took a percentage before she handed out the money - outrageous!!

We always give 10% of the total bill regardless of vouchers or not - unless the service has been bad. Then we downgrade according to how bad. We haven't given more than 10% as we feel the food and service would have to be truly exceptional for that to happen - and it never has been!
