Money Moral Dilemma: How big a tip should I give when using a 2 for 1 voucher?

Nope, not heard of it.
Oh dear. You shouldn't admit your ignorance online.
George Orwell is a famous English author (you must have heard of 1984 and Animal Farm) who wrote Down and Out... as a memoir of his times, amongst others of working in a Parisian restaurant as a pot washer - no tips! One of his observations after seeing various kitchens was that the more you paid for food the more sweat and spit you got in it. The conditions at the most expensive restaurants were the worst. The book was published in the early 30's so hopefully the same is not true now.0 -
I think your completely missing the point!. Yes tipping should be abolished and the employer should be responsible for all ages. But prices won't go up and wages won't go up because they will want to remain competitive.
How much do you think someone should be paid to carry plates around and write down orders?. It's not exactly highly skilled is it or difficult to find people who can do the job!.
I am a Finance Director in a very competitive industry (nothing to do with restaurants) so I am highly qualified to comment on this and I can assure you that the prices will go up. As you point out the industry is competitive and this means that profit levels will be at the lowest that is acceptable for the business. Either prices rise or the restaurant goes out of business.
All academic of course as this is not going to happen.
As for your insulting remarks about waiting staff, probably best ignored. But as a recruiter I know that it is easy to find staff but hard to find the right staff.0 -
I wonder how many people who are morally outraged at the thought of tipping as "They are already paid to do a job" would return a bonus given by their employers with the words "You already pay me to do a job so to pay me a bonus would be wrong so please take it back"
Any gift from my employer would be a bonus, I don't take on the job expecting it and have the hump when I don't.0 -

I really find it hard to believe your a finance director with what you have just posted.
So please explain to me why employers would give waiting staff a pay rise if they stopped getting tips?.
They would simply keep paying them the same wage and wouldn't rise prices.
If they don't give the staff a pay rise then the business will still be making the same amount of profit, so therefore they don't need to raise prices!.
Also how can a realistic assessment of the duties of waiting staff be insulting?. I really don't think any waiting staff are under the illusion that it takes special skills to carry plates or write down orders.
Plus if it was difficult to get the right staff then the employers would be paying more than minimum wage to tempt them. If anything I think their are not enough waiting staff jobs because they are in high demand for students and people who want some work but have limited working skills.0 -

It's the employers job to pay staff so if a staff member does a good job and gets a bonus from the employer that's the correct way to do it!.
Expecting your customers to pay you tips when they have already paid for the food and service is wrong!.
Some of the best restaurants I have been to have been independent and you can tell the staff really care about what they are doing. This means the service and food is second to none.
They are much better than restaurants staffed with employees who only deliver good service to receive a bribe!.0 -
I cannot believe the level of selfish arrogance on this one thread. There are a lot of people here that I am glad I don't know.
I am in the lucky position of not having to worry too much about 10% or 15% on my bill and I happily pay it unless the service has been poor. I have a great deal of respect for waiting staff and when I see some of the abuse they get from the customers I am surprised they don't just tip the food in their laps and walk out.
Wow! If you don't like what happens here make sure you never go to the USA because over there they are happy to tell you exactly what they think if you don't leave a tip.
I will not comment any more on this thread or any other on this site. My brief foray into the MSE world is over!!0 -

If you are unable to construct a logical and justifiable argument to support your position then maybe you should consider your opinion to be illogical. No matter how much you earn or have saved paying an extra 10% or 15% on a bill makes no sense and is wasting money!.
I definitely don't support the abuse that waiting staff get just for doing their job and agree it's unacceptable. But do you also think that the abuse that hospital staff get is unacceptable?. They also should have the respect of everyone who visits the hospital. So using your logic shouldn't they be more deserving of a tip?. If you have never given them a tip then why not?.
I'll leave you with one final thing. Here is a good video from an expert who explains how giving people money to get them to perform well at their jobs is not the solution. Therfore giving tips does not promote good waiting staff:

If you're going to tip, then tip as a percentage of what the bill should have been, not what it was discounted to.
Having just started working as a waitress, I can confirm, that where I work, the tips are given to the staff. All tips are put into a box and shared between all staff that were working, including the kitchen porter and the person behind the bar. It would be great if I got to keep the tips I was given myself, but there are others that work in the background, also for minimum wage, who never get seen. Just try to remember that when leaving your tips.I used to have a HUGE mortgage, but it's all gone now :T

Considering your a waitress why do you think that customers should subsidise your wages?. The wage of the person who is making the food and serving you isn't really relavent to the customer.0
