Bank customers are being urged to avoid Santander cash machines across Lancashire after a series of incidents which threatened security, police said.

Criminals have been targeting the machines and stealing customer card details and cash.

Santander Group is unable to deactivate the machines and is advising customers not to use them, Lancashire Police confirmed.

I wonder what they have done to them?

Cant remotely deactivate their OWN tech (or wont) nor inform the public or its customers not to use their ATM's whilst investigating? They waste our public services time to announce such?

Publicity nightmare, CEO prob at his holiday home with his work mobile off.

    Poor show Santander.
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

..and if they know there is something dodgy, how acceptable is the "unable to deactivate the machines" message?

If they can't take them offline remotely, surely branch managers should be being recalled to unplug the damn things.

    True.

    True.

Perhaps the branch manager/s are also at their holiday homes in the country with no mobile signal. :rotfl:

Publicity wise and the financial hit it takes refunding fraud is very much karma for Santander.

I don't believe they can't shut them off remotely, that is a load of BS.

In fact I'm sure they have to be able to switch them off in case there is a national emergency etc.

Unless what they mean is, they can't switch them off, in a sense the machine will still take your card.

Very interested to know if anything has been hacked, and if this goes beyond lanks.

Don't think anything spectacular is going on here, just the old stick a card reader on trick.

According to the Met Police up to 90% of cash machine frauds are committed by Romanian gangs. Is there is a connection here?

  • This is worrying, I live in Yorkshire, which is not too far away obviously!, I wonder whether it will spread over the Pennines.

There has been numerous machines in North Wales as well in last fortnight - just wondering is there something special about Santander ATM's that are vulnerable to scammers as I have not heard locally of any other banks being affected?

If the inability to remotely deactivate is true (and I have to say I have severe doubts about it) then it implies a highly sophisticated attack, and one that would be very unlikely to be limited to Lancashire.

Lots of their machines are out of the ark. My local still have the same machines that were installed 25 years ago.
