Looking more and more like this is just a stick on device to the actual ATM, rather than some widespread major hack.

I haven't seen any of the reports, but this is the usual method. A lookalike cardreader is attached to the card slot on the ATM, which skims the info from the magstripe on the user's card. The PIN is captured by a discretely installed camera, or a keyboard overlay. If this equipment goes unnoticed and is later retrieved by the scammers, cloned cards are then produced to withdraw from the victims' accounts.

The latest ATM designs are less susceptible to being fitted with the devices. Possibly the Romanian gang or whoever has found that their devices fit older style Santander machines in the Lancashire area.

To be safe, check whether the card slot sticks out more than it should, give it a good yank to see if it comes loose, same with the keypad. Look above for any miniature camera and/or lightly touch an extra digit or two during PIN entry.

See, what annoys the hell out of me about this is that Santander is quoted as asking its customers to remain vigilant....errrr....well of course, but what about Santander (and all the other banks and bldg societies) remaining vigilant!!

Banks save money on staff and opening hours by encouraging us customers to use ATMs and then expect US to police them??
    Come on!!
Nothing much wrong with reminding account holders that they need to remain vigilant when using ATMs. That's not asking us to police ATMs. Also, if you have done everything that can reasonably be expected from you and you still got scammed, the bank will be paying you every penny back.

The Lloyds TSB green slot things looked dodgy in themselves when introduced.

I live in Lancashire it was on the local police Facebook site a few days ago. In the local town we have card machines at NatWest HSBC TSB Halifax as well as Santander plus Asda and Tesco and the petrol station all within a few hundred yards so it's not a big issue to avoid Santander machines, I can't remember ever using it to be honest.

I read warning on Facebook on Friday afternoon from a member of the public that Santander ATM in Lytham St Annes had been targeted. Surprised hearing it on the national news today, why have Santander sat on this the last few days.

I'd also imagine it's the classic "fake plate" to skim/clone the card when using the ATM.

It's happened a few times over the last couple of years here in Derby (in this instance it was ATMs outside Tesco Express stores).

I'm probably wrong in my statement but don't some ATMs go automatically "out of order" when they are tampered with?
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
