I posted the sensible answer earlier when I replied, here's what I actually do.

I'm a firearms and shotgun cert holder. As a result I have to be squeaky clean as any prosecution would result in loss of privaledge and likely loss of freedom.

But, what I do have is a 12 bore side by side double barelled shotgun that has been deactivated. I have the certificate. Doesn't need to be kept in a locked cabinet so shares my bed.:A:A:A:A:A:A:A:A:A:A:A

But please oh please consider the issue if anyone called at the door innocently and you/I appeared with said weapon:eek::eek::eek::eek:,,,, laser sight red dots anyone?
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Now, are you sure that it isn't illegal to threaten someone with that? You might even lose your FAC if the police happened to find out.

And of course, you would be in a total pickle if someone decided to try and take you on (or if there were two of them!)

Just as a further comment on my earlier Maglite post, when I told my neighbour, she asked if I intended to dazzle the intruder with it. That has just brought to mind these laser lights that idiots aim at aircraft on occasion. Presumably they must be extremely blinding. Presumably illegal to have in the bedroom in case of intruders?

Always makes me laugh this one. My police officer friend has a bat by his front door.

    I dont.

Weapon is a bad word to use in a court.

Heavy things hurt when you walk into them, heavy things hurt when theyre thrown at you. On my way to the front door from my bedroom i have two books on my bedside table (quite big and heavy), a ceramic table lamp, a bedside table, a washing basket, a dog (in its bed). Any of those things being thrown at someone coming into my house (front door) would do more damage for less risk than trying to swing a bat/torch at someone. Also worth noting me being right handed would really struggle to swing a bat as im going down stairs as there is a wall there and staricases tend to be quite confined.

So yeh my plan if someone comes in is to not try and get to my weapon but to pick everything up and top use it as a weapon. Throw, scream, dribble and spit. Hopefully theyll get the idea i dont want to be burgled/attacked and hopefully theyll think im too much like hardwork (the good lady already does!).

Illegal? It's a cat toy, you shine the dot on the walls and they play with it.

It's quite impractical however, the laser has to hit you right in the pupil. Not easy to hit a moving target.

    Good grief stator,
Is this seriously the same device that when not amusing Tiddles, has been known to cause airliners to make emergency landings?

You'd need quite a high power one for a pilot in a plane a few hundred meters away, but not quite such a powerful one for home use. But still I can't see how you'd aim it at anyone even if you did want to use it as a weapon, they'd have to stand still for you.

The ones used against aircraft tend to be high power (something like 5-20mw or more), as opposed to what are usually <5mw pointers you use at home for various things.

The laser hitting the glass of the aircraft cockpit, usually at night, is then diffused enough to affect the pilot's sight, which due to it being at night is far more vulnerable to it.

A good, high quality, high power torch (some of the LED units are very very bright and small) would be far better, as they don't have to be aimed precisely to dazzle someone in the same room, and are unlikely to cause any permanent damage to the eye.
