Thank you very much, Ive applied :TI'm back. We went a bit mad in the garden this afternoon after the sun unexpectedly came out:
The big project today was rebuilding our raised bed. We previously built this from slats from a couple of pallets I found abandoned in a ditch and carried home. (Classy lady aren't I?!) For various reasons we've moved it next to the hut/shed and I've raised it 8 inches taller to help OH look after her back. Inside there is a cut-down pallet on legs with a window pane on top to form a sturdy base. It's then lined with compost bags staple-gunned together and filled with mainly-homemade compost.
Cost: £3.45
Paint: About 50p
Staples: From stores
Four brackets: £2
Window pane: About 75p
Sundry bits of extra wood: Free from neighbour's skip.
Nails: About 20p
Last year we grew savoy cabbages in this and we're still eating them shredded from the freezer.
I also dug over the shrub border before the rain set back in hoping that this will allow the rainwater to penetrate the soil and get the shrubs back into life.
So, free exercise and pretty much free garden upgrade. :T
That all sounds fab Allydowd! My FIL told me that the cabbages we planted were winter ones and to leave them in, I didnt check, they werent and we lost them all after the first few frosts  Have learnt my lesson for this year :rotfl:
I love the exercize from gardening, 16000 steps and 2 hours 40 mins in the fat burn zone on Friday :T:T
Nothing wrong with skip / ditch diving. I found brand new lino for my bathroom from a skip and a old tyre to turn into a tyre swing at our allotment from a ditch.... :rotfl:It means 'payment a day' Hannah, meaning throwing every little bit of money at debt / mortgage / savings or whatever, as often as possible, even if only pence
Welcome, by the way
Normally the thread isn't as big as this as we usually have a fresh one each day / weekend, but of course this is a long weekend..... Hope you will join us again.
Thanks Dawn. I havent been on MSE for a long while, but its nice to be back, and in good company! Thank you for for explaination
I love all the ideas and inspiration.

Evening campers. Welcome Hannah, stick with this lovely thread will do wonders for your finances
lovely to see you too Pippi managed all my list apart from packaging fleabay items. Moved money though
another listed and another ended. Might as well package 3 tomorrow instead
FIL did about half the electrics. Might have to send back the lamps we bought. Would not be the end of the world as they weren't cheap. Think he'll come back next week to finish.
Loads of meat left and as we had to switch electrics off the oven cooked some of it it was :money: too :rotfl:
On a down side cracked my tooth on some tasty crackling
luckily I'm going anyway for check up on Thursday, hopefully it can wait until then. It's only about the size of a pin head, but with my tooth feels like a crater :rotfl: not sure if I'll get on tomorrow as have to work, will try my best. Soup already out of freezer for lunch. 0 -
Hi everyone,
I've been AWOL this last week as we've been on holiday to Whitby then visiting my family further north, just got home this afternoon.
I need to get back on the moneysaving wagon (although came home with over £100 of holiday money I didn't spend). Will be a spendy day tomorrow as I need to go food shopping - but from the food money pot. I'm also picking up a wedding dress I've ordered so fingers crossed it'll be ok - I'm having a nightmare finding anything I either like or isn't stupid money, I refuse to go over budget!

Morning all - wet and windy one here due to storm Katie (rather a nice name for nasty weather :rotfl:). It was worse during the night though, must go out in the rain and inspect for damage in a minute, though first glance shows just items blown around the garden.
List for today:
No heating, at least at the moment
Fold washing from airer and put in airing cupboard
Tidy up / housework
Pay milkman online
Dog walk(s) when weather permits, otherwise I just end up going on a wet walk with a small dry dog tucked inside my coat :rotfl:
Pop to Sainsbugs for a few bits
Cook a roast beef dinner later
Have a nice day everyone, despite typical Bank Holiday weather!0 -
Hi March Money-Watchers,
Morning all. Welcome Hannah. Do stick with us. We need all the supporters we can get!
:easter: Monday.
Mainly staying at home today and continuing with the gardening. Our weather's not too bad today.
Truth of the matter is this: last year we had selective success with our vegetable gardening. A huge amount of effort went in and for a moderate amount of gain. Things just didn't come together. Lots of onion, radish and cabbage, some potatoes, everything else pretty much pitiful.
So this year we need to up our game. Sure, we had a lot of fun and a lot of exercise but our weather was lousy and that didn't help. Barely a dry sunny day all Summer.
The list will grow as I do things:

Ally have to confess that I had a go at growing veg but quickly became quite disheartened. I remember one year losing a huge amount of plants to slugs, despite having slug pellets down. Now I just dont have the time but one day I will try again.
And Maria I do hope "poultry stuff" is not actual chickens!!!
Well done on the dress PrincessPea. We celebrate our 20th anniversary this year and should do something to mark the occasion but no idea what!
Weather is dreadful, I have been up since 6am. I think I heard DS2 going to bed about 4am (!) and he woke me up going to the loo then shutting his bedroom door quite hard. He is at work later so will need taking there and picking up.
Have a restful Easter Monday everyone x0 -
Hello everyone

I'm back in MSE land having had a year or so away while the real world was too busy and web connections too uncertain! Arriving back here debt free but in the brink of a mortgage extension which feels like a debt. Would love to drop in regularly again, I thought of you all every time I did my ironing (turning it off for the last few bits) and otherwise tried to keep myself in order!
For today:- Walk this am whilst the sun is out - need to up my steps, and get some fresh air./time in the wild Planning to explore a new route from home.
- Dinner from the fridge - lots of L/O to eat up. DD out for lunch; will take snacks, fruit & water on my walk.
- Update SOA and post on new diary

- Make in-roads into expenses submissions for work. Turn that stack of receipts into cash in my bank, albeit painfully slowly!
- Evening entertainment with DD - last few episodes of Night Manager
- Have applied for a free will making appt via Oxfam https://www.oxfam.org.uk/donate/leaving-a-legacy/free-will-writing-offer
- Find out when phone contract is up.

Good morning all
Another sleep free night
but I have absolutely no idea why. The weather is a bit miserable here - cold and raining (rather typical of a bank holiday) but we definitely don't have the brunt of storm Katie.
