There is now a roadside drugs test in a similar vein to the breathalyser. Evidential blood test is then taken at the police station if roadside is positive.
For illegal drugs, yes. Not for prescription or OTC.

Last time I looked codeine phosphate was an opiate. Enough in the blood stream would give a positive on a drug test

Christ ! all these holier than thou casting the first stone ! you can lose your licence on a pint of beer nowadays ! and before you lot start up again in condemnation I bet half of you are driving on co- codamol or prescription drugs which are a damn sight worse than a pint or two. The same thing go s for all you people driving with out of focus eyes because you re too tight/vain to get new glasses every year.

The difference is that us 'holier than thou' posters may be casting stones because of direct experience of the aftermath of drink drivers. If you're so confident that every one of us, or indeed a significant proportion of drivers in general are off their tits on legal/illegal drugs, or too blind to see in front of their cars, perhaps you'd be able to explain how I know of exactly zero people who've been killed, injured, or involved in accidents where those were factors, whilst I know personally of one death, one case of life-changing injury, and two minor knocks in which a third party's drinking was a factor?

You are correct, indeed, that one can lose one's licence after one drink - the answer, though, is simply not to take the chance of having a drink and then driving. If you choose to take the risk, and you get caught, then you deserve all you get. IMHO.

    Coincidence? I don't believe so.

But you'd have to take a fair few tablets to be monged off your tits enough to get to that stage; and I doubt few if any of the reasonable people who are legitimately taking codeine tablets would be getting in a car and driving if they were to that level.

Have you tried 2 codeine tabs (60mgs) ? and we re not talking about "reasonable Daily Mail people now, but any one new to any sort of opiate for the first few times would know its far worse than a pint. Its like being stoned ! We have an aged population driving around on our roads in their Peugeots and Kia s drugged up and half blind and I m more in fear of those road users than the drink driving brigade who at least are usually very late at night. This is 100% true but I narrowly missed a head on a few months ago when a half blind OAP had a head on with the car in front of me for no reason whatsoever, other than he was disorientated .Thankfully the police have just started prosecuting people driving on cannabis who ve been getting away with piloting a car on planet x with no fear of prosecution since the 1960 s. I d bet that if the police also did random roadside sight tests they would catch thousands failing the number plate tests every day.

Well, seeing as the maximum recommended dosage of codeine is 60mg in one go, anyone who wasn't used to the drug and who takes double the maximum dosage isn't exactly being sensible.
You could say the same for things like Lemsip if people take far more than they should they may well get sleepy whilst driving.

I would presume that the doctor who prescribed such strong painkillers would have given a serious warning about driving on them, anyway.

Plus there are warnings on the package about driving unlike on a pint.

Doctors don`give any warnings but there are the usual disclaimers on the information leaflet.Codeine phosphate is nt one of the stronger painkillers around being prescribed for low to moderate pain relief. Two of the 30 gms will knock the first timer user on his/her back worse than 4 pints. IMO we all at far greater risk on UK roads from stubborn ancient old drivers careering around the streets, usually at 20mph , all on various painkillers for arthritus , anti cancer, prostate etc etc and with unbelievably bad eyesight.
I m a working OAP myself so I m not an ageist but a realist. My advice is to stay clear of Peugeot s.
HG I meant 2x 30 mgs which =60mgs..bloody hell 120 mgs will have you piling it up on the first bend !

That's it keep defending the drink drivers. I wasn't knocked on my back first time I had codeine but wouldn't think of driving after four pints.
