certainly Nicola is entitled to say anything she likes

but when speaking as first minister for a smallish region of the sovereign Uk, she ought to ask herself whether it is in the best interest of the people of that non sovereign region.
a little difficult to see how it benefits those people
I think all the party leaders in Scotland felt the same way in the run up to this election. Everyone is just hoping now that Trump isn't as bad as his narratives were during the campaign. Time will tell.

It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

the question is, how does Nicola's statements help the people of that small region of the UK?

Is a simple enough logic as to why she was fully entitled to say something regarding Trump being elected. She wasn't speaking for the UK. She never does.

We all have entitlements but most people understand that often our responsibilities outweigh those entitlements.
Poor judgement once again from Sturgeon

  • Oh I think you do. You said it yourself.

But as your elected First Minister of Scotland (like it or not ) for at least the next four and a half years, she's certainly entitled, and in fact expected to make a statement for Scots residents and Scottish media consumption.

So am not really sure what there is to get yourself so worked up about.

You're correct in the sense that as the Scottish First Minister she has a duty to represent Scottish people whilst she is holding office. The problem is, not all Scottish people would agree with her support of Hillary, I think it's quite clear she's overstepped the mark there and made a stateswoman faux pas.

Ruth's tweets are irrelevant she's not in government.

When you hold office there are standards and expectations that Nicola has on this occasion fallen short of.

Honestly, NS can't win on here. Can she not have an opinion on a major world event? Are you posting someone on the Welsh and NIrish First Minsters having made statments too?

Of course she can she just needs to remember which hat she is wearing. Be that First minister of Scotland, leader of the SNP or in a personal capacity.

The trouble is she is not very good at making that distinction!

It's a thread about Scotland so people were discussing Nicola's comment.

Off course she can have an opinion, the skill lies in who you express it to, as the FM she is effectively saying this is the opinion of the people of Scotland, pretty much diplomacy 101 stuff.

Where's the Welsh and NI posts?

Politicians have a choice between being a populist rabble rousers or statespersons
most are a bit of both

it usually makes no difference in Nicola case, as nobody takes any notice of her on the world stage,....... except maybe Trump...
