Oh my if the news that's filtering through my time line regarding Brexit Unilever and Tesco are true ... then that's a lot to thank the Brexit voters for ... NOT

Care to share the relevance to Brexit? Or you just another person that attributes everything to the news story of the day.

It was always going to happen in the event of the Tories going for the hard Brexit option. It'll push the ball firmly back into May's court.
Nicola Sturgeon challenges May with second referendum bill

The first minister said she wanted the legislation in place to trigger a second independence vote before the UK is expected to formally leave the EU in March 2019 – a stance she had recently backed away from.
<--- the backed away from sentence is complete tosh.
She said: “I am determined that Scotland will have the ability to reconsider the question of independence – and to do so before the UK leaves the EU – if that is necessary to protect our country’s interests.”

It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

Good luck to these Scottish indyref2 voters I say.

How do they work out what is best I do not know. It must have been hard enough last time. Now they will have weak oil prices; an unknown relationship with the EU (talks will still be in progress); an unknown in the cordiality with rUK going forward. Just as some in the EU want to strike a hard deal with UK, some in Westminster will want to go hard in the negotiations with the SNP.

It could even win the Tories votes. Go figure ! :D
  • Ah yes, and the reactions (all from the BBC so far):
As we prepare to leave the EU, the first minister should commit her government to working constructively with the UK government to seize the opportunities that will bring, not taking Scotland back to the divisive constitutional debates of the past.
    From David Mundell.

Nicola Sturgeon’s top priority is to divide our nation once again. But our country is already divided following the Tories’ reckless Brexit gamble and we should not be seeking further divisions. Our economy is in trouble, and the last thing we need is the uncertainty of another independence referendum.
    From Kezia Dugdale.

Nicola Sturgeon could today have set out a positive, constructive vision for how the country progresses together. Instead she has made it clear she wants to take Scotland back to yet more uncertainty, more division and more constitutional upheaval. Her comments show she has given up on speaking for Scotland and is now solely playing to the SNP gallery.
    From Ruth Davidson.

The SNP have now made it crystal clear that a second independence referendum is their top priority. Their delegates went wild with a standing ovation at the first whiff of a referendum on independence in Nicola Sturgeon's speech. The Scottish Government are now rushing forward with the publication of a bill when they should be tackling the huge challenges in health, in education and policing. The first minister must take independence off the table.
    From Alistair Carmichael.

On top of that, a poll by BMG:
The survey by BMG of 1,000 people, carried out between 29 September and 3 October, found 47% respondents were against another vote, with 38% in favour and 15% unsure. When asked about a hard Brexit where Britain would leave the single market, 12% said that result would sway them towards wanting another independence referendum.

    Twelve percent?
    Wow.
So despite what some on here seem to suggest, nowhere near enough to make the outcome of another referendum certain.

Despite the (expected) rhetoric, it does look like the SNP are "shooting themselves in the foot".

It'll be framed as Scotland v's the Tories.
Jamie Ross So here's yer framing for the next #indyref. "We will win," says Sturgeon.

    Oooh, a consultation eh?

That's one way of disguising the fact that there is no appetite for a second referendum nor a 'yes' vote if one were held.

If Sturgeon thought she'd win there wouldn't be a consultation, she'd just announce the date.
If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.

On what planet were Mundell, Davidson, Dugdale or Carmichael ever going to say anything else ?

    Oh and that poll.
New poll shows 55% support for independence referendum if Tories pursue hard Brexit

More than half of voters in Scotland would support an independence referendum in the event of a Tory-led hard Brexit.
The poll showed that the number of people who support the option of a second independence referendum being on the table would rise from 45% to 55%, when undecided voters are removed, following a hard Brexit.

It has to go before Holyrood first. The date will be open ended.
