I understand that even in Scotland there is a limit to the amount of water that falls from the skies although in the western side of the country I guess that sometimes feels unlikely.

I heard a factoid on the radio that globally there is 3 times the amount of water subterranean than surface based water.
It's astonishing when you think of it like that.
Perhaps they could reuse those defunct oil drilling machines to drill for water ?

Apparently Scotland gets about 20% or so more rain that Sydney.
We get a shed load of rain but it all falls at once, Aussies don't get that thing of the rain just falling and falling for days like you get in the UK or at least not in Sydney. We used to live in a real old Aussie house with a tin roof for a bit and we had to turn the TV off when it rained properly! I loved it but the rest of the family weren't so impressed.0 -

If you ever read the xkcd book "What If.." he imagines what would happen if all of an area's rainfall fell as a single drop. Put it this way, you could drop an atom bomb afterwards and I doubt anybody'd notice.:eek:There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

I read it each update. My phone very kindly lets me know when a new post appears on the XKCD website.
It was a bit odd at first realising that my phone had worked out I'm a Spurs fan and liked XKCD but it is quite helpful at the same time.0 -
I realise youre joking but I wonder could the Scotch whisky industry realistically increase by that extent out of interest? They make 72,000,000 litres at the moment. Is making 720 million even possible with the water, land available for barley production etc.?
UK farmers have supplied Malting Barley to the Scottish whisky industry for some years ( keep it quiet though).

so your view is that the current Barnet formula will keep on going post out vote for a number of years for Scotland to get its house in order?
Although it will be a slap in the face of the English to ask us to pay your bills for a few years while you move out slowly, we like you lot enough to possibly accept
But still a day will come when the English credit card will have to be cut up and independence put in place. When that day comes 2-3-4 years after the out vote what choice will you have but to move onto the Scot-Peso?
I am not sure going to the voters and saying dont worry we will sort out a new currency in 3 years time during which time the english will let us use their credit card will fill scots with a lot of confidence. You will still come up with the problem of having to convert 1 minute after midnight at some stage.
My view is what will realistically happen. As long as a single penny of Scottish taxes go directly to the UK Treasury, then Barnett will have to exist in some form. End of discussion on that.
It'll won't be until after negotiations over debt/assets and shares of joint institutions are divvied up and agreed upon that Barnett to Scotland, and payments from Scotland towards joint UK debt and joint institutions like defence etc will stop. All of this will have to be sorted out beforehand.
You and Generali seem to be under some weird impression that a minute past midnight on any Yes vote, things as they are will instantaneously cease to be and Scotland will be using a new currency the day after. Barnett will continue until Scottish businesses and taxpayers no longer contribute directly via HMRC to the UK Treasury. More than likely even afterwards Scotland will use the £, for a while anyway.
You surely weren't thinking that after a Yes vote, Scotland would instantly be cut adrift and Barnett instantly stopped while HMRC still collected in Scottish taxes ? Or that Scotland would be allocated it's full debt share with no assets from 300 years worth of the UK or that Trident would just stay where it is ?It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -
If Scotland votes Yes, which won't happen because economics, but let's assume for a moment that they do, what on earth do you imagine are the circumstances where English voters say, "Ah yes MP representing me, the Scots have decided to quit the country, I would like a large part of my tax pounds spent on making sure that they leave as happily as possible"?
Personally, my attitude would be to tell my representative that if she wanted my vote next time around to make sure that the money was spent on educating my kids and keeping my family well not on paying for a bunch of free parking spaces in soon to be foreign hospitals and buying boxes for foreign babies.
You're being ridiculous and you must know it. There would be a lot to sort out afterwards. Seriously, are you suggesting that if Scotland votes Yes, Barnett should stop the day afterwards ?
What will you do about Trident for example ? Just leave it up here ?It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
