I ask out of ignorance (a normal situation for me)

is it legal for a political party to access the electoral roll for party political purposes?

AFAIK the register - well, one version of it - is publicly available and copies can be bought. See -

  • I can see how this would be good Twitter argument fodder for the keyboard warrior crowd - but I'll just keep reverting to the fact that GERS is signed off by Scottish Government Economists - and while some small element of it would always be up for debate the SNP controlled Scottish Government would not be allowing it's own economists to sign off figures that are likely to be vastly incorrect.

The SNP, whose primary aim is Indy and who are responsible for the accuracy of GERS as the party of government, do not even begin to claim GERS is materially wrong...

Now if Nicola Sturgeon wants to run another Indyref and have any hope of winning she needs to explain what if anything is wrong with GERS and what cuts she'd make to the expenditure contained in it.

Until then this is mildly amusing but ultimately pointless.

I don't find it amusing. I find it baffling and can only assume that many thousands of others who interact on social media feel the same.

One good thing to come about this year as elantan touched on is that many of the indy groups have finally gotten their acts together. Am guessing because after 2014 there seemed little point in starting. However, in an attempt to present some possible solutions and answers to any so far hypothetical deficit ( whatever size ) there are now numerous papers and research projects on the go, just in case another ref is called.

The SNP will have to do the same. However, unlike online where these other groups have the luxury of little in the way of coverage. The SNP know as soon as they release anything it will generate negative headlines and stories all over the UK which will take hold. It won't really matter what it says. Powder dry for a while yet there I think.

    Meanwhile :-
Can anyone recall a single policy pushed by Ruth Davidson since Brexit vote? She has obsessed over #Indyref2 to exclusion of all else.
    ;)
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

Given that social media was also the source of the incredibly baffling and completely false 'vast secret oilfield' claims, "whisky export duty" claims, and "GERS is wrong cause Tax revenue is allocated to English HQ" claims....

Frankly I'm surprised anyone pays any attention to Twitter at all.;)

That's the reality of being in Government. Full media spotlight. Accountability to the electorate. There's nowhere to hide. Little more than what you spend your time doing.

    Don't talk crap.

They set the agenda peddling messages that seep into everyday narratives. Poison. I may be someone who thinks that Scotland would be better run from Holyrood ( and that incidentally covers any party in charge in future not just the SNP, as they'll all have the be Scotland centric ). But Jeezo you English are spoon fed the biggest diet of nastiness going daily. Then you end up quoting the darn things as fact too.

Scottish media is there to much the same degree, but forced to concentrate far more deeply other than the Ruth Davidson - FAB, Sturgeon - wee jimmy krankie levels that the English media are at currently with added Daily Express CAPS LOCKS !!! to drive home a point.

The reality of being in the media spotlight if they're against you is headlines like the above based on nothing much in the way of facts. The SNP would be well advised to keep the economics to minimum until a ref is called, then build the campaign on it. Otherwise there will be another wall built in headline land.
