    The tactic of keeping quiet

The lack of positive contribution to the debate maybe her downfall. Given her negotiating stance is totally transparent. Lack of forward vision is totally uninspiring.

    Not that wee ? Do_HHavW4AAHDOL.jpg
The tactic of keeping quiet while the Tories and Labour fight like cats in a sack over Brexit seems to be working nicely. Keeps Brexit front and center. Because as soon as Nicola Sturgeon names a date and vote method ( ref/election etc ) the full weight of the media and establishment will turn turrets and will come down very hard on her, the SNP and the wider indy movement. Brexit consequences airily dismissed as a side issue. We are all too well aware of this.

The fact this chap above thinks that Scottish Independence is quite wee now simply proves that this tactic has worked beautifully over the last year or so. The more Scots are exposed to Tory Brexit's and Corbyn's dithering, the more there are wondering if independence might not be such a bad idea after all. Theresa 'hotstepper' May isn't doing the Union any favours.

The SNP/Sturgeon's stance on Brexit/indy/indy votes is the same as it ever was. If Scotland is taken out of the single market/customs union.. Scotland votes ( at a time Sturgeon sees as optimal for a Yes win ).09/10/18

Percentage of Scots who will actually vote for Independence in an actual real referendum: 37%.

Agh, it's wee and getting wee-er.

I wonder how The National is doing. Surely that is the spangly bellwether of voracious nationalism!

Now the National’s sales have collapsed. Did I mention that? In 2015 the paper sold an average of 12,124 per edition. In 2016 that fell to 8,496. That is not down to the publisher (Newsquest) stripping out so-called bulks (copies given away free to bolster figures) as there were no bulks in there in 2015, in line with Newsquest policy.

    Argh! It's wee!

    Your post is haver central.

Where are you getting your fantasy 37% from ? :p
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

Her speech is being lauded and getting praise from even the most unionist of uniony Scottish political commentators today as far as I can see. They're mostly all remainers you see.
'Never has so much been lost by so many to satisfy so few' - Sturgeon uses Churchill to slam Brexit
I expect most of them are just extremely relieved that she didn't announce anything indy ref wise. They're all warmly congratulating Nicola via Twitter and snap opinion columns on her 'pragmatism' and 'patience'. Most envisioning another referendum is now many years away........*mists of time*

Imo that's what they want to believe and what the SNP wants them to believe. As I said before the media has it's attention elsewhere and that's where it should stay. But there won't be another Section 30 issued to Holyrood as long as the polls show it might be lost. The SNP aren't stupid enough to think there will be either.
"Well, let us send this message today. You can oppose independence - that is your democratic right. But you cannot - and you will not - deny Scotland’s right to choose"
I think *they'll wait quietly on the sidelines for the next few months until we can all finally see what kind of Brexit and what PM we'll end up with. Then they'll swoop in and stir the Scottish pot.

Refusing a referendum will open the door for the SNP to lower the constitutional bar. They'll have no choice if all other democratic means are denied to Scottish voters.Kenny below also quotes this as the SNP, but Thatcher stated this too.

Are we about to see the SNP revert to its pre-1999 policy of requiring only a majority in a general election as a mandate to negotiate Scottish independence?

It could be a powerful means of bouncing Westminster into agreeing a new indyref. SNP (after general election majority):

"We have a mandate to negotiate independence"

UK Gov: "Sorry, you need a referendum win"

SNP: "Then let us have a referendum."

    UKGov: "Er.."
    * They'll = the SNP. Not the wider indy groups and grassroots orgs.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

You had a referendum and you voted to stay in. Then you had an election and you elected a load of Tory MPs. If you get anymore votes you’ll probably end up giving the Highlands to Jacob Rees-Mogg.
  • I expect most of them are just extremely relieved that she didn't announce anything indy ref wise.

You aren't wrong there. But we aren't fooled by it. Nicola thinks she has set an ambush but it isn't much of an ambush if her enemies know it is there.

All she has to do to get what she wants is sit tight and leave the issue for another generation in 20-odd years time. Chances are people will vote for it then.

The absolute worst thing for independence supporters would be another referendum in the near term amid Brexit chaos.

20 years of taxing Scots more than the rUK, 20 years of continued plummeting education standards, 20 years of constantly banging on about independence and 20 years of probable stonking great budget deficits paid for by the largesse of their unquestioning English Brothers and Sisters.
    Yeah, independence is guaranteed. :)
I read a stat the other day that said that Scotland was now responsible for 30% of the current U.K. deficit. Remarkable if true.
