The SNP see an independent Scotland waltzing into the EU and the Euro. Therefore the practical solution is to either adopt Sterling or try and negotiate to remain in the Sterling currency union in the meantime.
A Scottish Groat isn't really necessary and wouldn't have to be backed. Generali did some good non-partisan posts in the old thread on currency options. There were pros and cons associated with each.
But the SNP see many things.
Very occasionally they put some of these things into practice.
Even more occasionally these will succeed.
Sadly most frequently it would appear that they do not.0 -

The reply?
Another "not a clue" post.
Here is what a "backed currency" is:
http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/backed-currency.html
Much though you may value your own common sense Shakey I don't think it will have quite the same value on world markets.
Well since it won't be a currency union, nor the Euro ( since you have to have your own currency ) that leaves either a Scottish £ pegged to sterling, or pegged to something else/floating.
So yes, a Scottish £ IS common sense since the options are limited. The name doesn't really matter anyway. What it's backed by we'll find out when the Growth Commission reports nearer the vote.It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -
Proud Scots are gritting their teeth and readying themselves for the hard work of independence.
They know it won't be easy. There will be lamentation, poverty, wailing and hard times a plenty before Scotland can stand bold against the world. But they are ready for it.
I'm not.
And at the last count neither were the majority of Scots.
Thanks for the laugh though; your phoney rhetoric is like something out of "Brigadoon". :rotfl:0 -

Many Scots, me included, disagree with you.
We have been handed lies and promises by the SNP for years and if there is going to be another try, I and many more will want to know.
I'd be a lot more concerned about how an independent Scotland would fund her current spending and the deficit. Currency is a side show.0 -

I'm sorry that people like me don't find your answers and posts definitive enough so we can all pack up and go home after reading them. But that's how it goes.It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

Sorry Jock what part of my words you've quoted is bull crap?
As far as I know every country either has their own currency or has adopted one. Yes, for sure, a newly independent Scotland would need to decide what to do but I guarantee you there will still be a currency you can use.
I think Scotland is already part of one of the world's most successful currency unions and should stay that way but, should independence arrive, I don't think the currency question will be that difficult to resolve.
There will be much bigger fish to fry.
Scotland is not part of a currency union. It is part of a country that uses that currency.
Sturgeon seems to be under the impression that Scotland could use the pound, in spite of previously being told that they could not. She also seems to think that if Scotland join the eu should independence ever come about, that they cannot be forced to take the euro. Problem is that an obligation to join the euro has been in the tready of accession since 2004.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

It'll be another country's currency. It's going to be difficult enough to borrow without the added risk that Scotland might just change the peg and shaft her creditors.0 -

But, the Scottish Parliament has said yay already and it's extemely unlikely they will be willing to accept the use of the latest YovGov or Survation figures as any sort of reason for halting democracy in Scotland.
Not a chance. Sturgeon wants to stay in the Single Market with as little disruption to Scottish interests as possible. So there will be a vote when Brexit talks end and not five years from now. She was about to set out her next steps ( towards a referendum ) before this GE was called, so it doesn't sound like she's planning on holding off on this either. Once this election is over with, expect her back at Bute House within a few weeks holding a very interesting press conference with most of the UK media there breathlessly covering it.
One can almost hear the spittle dropping on the floor. You fanatics are crazy.
Why is she waiting for the end of the GE? Why not now?
We will see what Sturgeon's new clothes are made of.Union, not Disunion

AMSJ,
I was discussing with another poster in this thread on this subject.
There will be cross thread discussions when the thread topics are overlapping.
There's no need for you to try and dictate what or where I post:wall:
