Changing the subject totally for a minute I am still amazed sometimes how different people's reactions to my stories make me feel better. I really do need to tell more people the horrid little secrets I hide away because usually people react in a way that makes me feel so much better.
I was talking to my old friend and work colleague about the time I was put on an antipsychotic that made me incontinent. I made a long post on the first thread about this and how much it hurt me but to summerise I ended up wetting myself on a bus and a woman ended up shouting how disgusting I was to all and sundry and everyone was staring at me, I felt utterly humiliated.
Well, I told my friend about this and she said I don't mean to be horrid but I did laugh. What a horrid thing to happen to you, you sitting there in a pile of wee while some strange woman with a huge hang up herself screamed the bus down! Trust you to have a weirdo notice!
You know what? Now I see the funny side because someone else does. Suddenly it isn't a humiliating secret anymore, it is just my luck that someone who would react like that would notice, most people wouldn't have. Now I see it as funny it isn't a horrid memory anymore. It's not great but it doesn't have to damage me forever, it was just one of those things and my friend wasn't phased by it at all. To her it was just a cringeworthy, funny story and although she felt sorry for me it wasn't a big deal to her.

I know this won't make me popular on this site, but I wasn't really impressed with Martin Lewis' post. I get what he's trying to do, but it is effectively "I'm voting to remain, barely" which is a less than stellar endorsement of remaining in the EU.
Yes! I think it's a real shame that the only remain info seems to be portrayed as the lesser of two evils, as better the devil you know. I don't think I've seen anything that's actually said "vote stay because it's a good thing". All the arguments (for both sides) seem focused on which will do least damage to the economy and which will give us the fewer number of migrants. I find that attitude in particular just horrific. Borders are utterly arbitrary, the only reason we in the west are so flipping obsessed with them is because we had the sheer good fortune to be born on the 'right' side of them.
The whole thing just makes me really angry. We're supposed to be a tolerant, civilised society but the biggest political decision for at least a generation is being based on how we can help the least amount of people. It's shameful.0 -
Do you really feel the referendum will go 'leave'?

Personally I hope so yes. I have many reasons why, I'd be here all day and would most likely kick of a debate, which probably isn't a good idea in this thread lol!
I've been popping in and out, reading bits and bobs, but just laying low for abit. Hope all are ok? X
Happy Birthday SJ btw! :bdaycake:0 -
PENGUIN (hate crimes, disillusionment, general not really being very patriotic!)
Consenting couples are now even forbidden from making a recording of certain harmless sex acts, basically meaning our government wants to legislate on what we can and cannot do in the bedroom and when the aforementioned homophobes are inching closer to government, this is a real concern.
END PENGUIN
Penguined for politics.
I just quoted a little bit. That particular piece of hateful and iniquitous legislation, section 63 of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 (yes, I know quite a bit about this subject), was not introduced by a Conservative government, but New Labour. It has mainly been used (unsuccessfully) by the CPS to target videos of certain acts between gay men, which I won't describe. Equal marriage was introduced by a Conservative prime minister after New Labour singularly failed to do the job properly (why?) despite its massive commons majority .
My point being that homophobia, intolerance and bigotry in general span the divides or race, religion, sex, wealth, politics, class (if you accept the concept) and education. There is no one banner under which you can group them all and no one party that can be said to support equality and acceptance above the others.
I describe my politics as libertarian because equality, human rights and civil liberties are what are important to me and no political party adequately represents my views, because they all (at least the big ones) have diverse opinions on these subjects across their membership - for example compare the views of Theresa May (current Conservative home secretary) and David Davis (former Conservative shadow home secretary) on the ECHR. You couldn't find two politicians more completely at odds on a subject, but they are in the same party.
END PENGUIN
As long as no harm is being done I just want people to accept that everyone is different and not try to constrain them to live their lives in a certain way, whether religion, sexual orientation, their appearance (i have a goth friend who gets a fair amount of abuse, for example), etc. Most people I know, including supporters of both the big parties, feel the same, but there are a vocal minority that don't and their views get ascribed to everyone they associate themselves with (much like tea was saying about media coverage of religions and equal marriage earlier).Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
