I really need to stop looking at kitten adverts.

I'm pretty sure Tim Berners-Lee invented the hypertext transfer protocol and HTML to facilitate the sharing of pictures and videos of kittens. All that stuff about scientists sharing research information at CERN was clearly just a smokescreen, it's all about kittens :D

Thursday night is training night. We were outside again. There was rather more commando crawling across the grass than I would have liked, but on a positive note as least he managed to stay the right way up for the duration this week.

Hi guys.. feeling anxious this eve, prob because I'm making some changes and change is a bit scary! I finally changed gp practice today.. I've got rid of my horrible doctor and the surgery is on the verge of closing anyway, but I'm nervous that my meds will not be messed up, and I hope I get an understanding gp this time.

And secondly, I start tomorrow at the bpd/ trauma centre and I meet my keyworker for the 1st time.. EEk! My bestie said it's like it's the 1st day of mental health school, and I'll be the new kid on the block! It's all good, but pushing my comfort zone out, after 5 years of being stuck at home, or in hospital.. it is giving me anxiety , but it will be good in the long run. My world has shrunk to the size of my flat, but I am slowly sowing the seeds of change :)

Oooh a kitten picture is mentioned and a WaS magically appears!

I am really unwell right now but not with any mental health problem for once, Addison's disease instead. I am extremely weak, everything is cramping, I have a permanent bad headache and can't keep food down. Basically, it's the heat.

For the record Addison's disease is an autoimmune disorder which means my body is attacking my adrenal glands. Therefore I don't produce enough cortisol and aldosterone. This is what we call adrenaline that we use for our body to function and what generally keeps us moving. We also sweat this out so if you have little to start with hot weather can make it much worse. Normally the body would make more to compensate, my body has no reserves to draw on. It has a knock on effect of stopping you being able to retain electrolytes which can cause kidney damage, my kidneys are hurting a lot right now. It often goes hand in hand with my thyroid autoimmune disease (my body is attacking my thyroid too) and if one flares so does the other.

When my thyroid condition flares I have little temperature control, if I am hot I stay like it no matter if I am in a cooler environment which causes more sweating and further cortisol and electrolyte loss. Together these mean that I crave salt constantly because my body needs more electrolytes which in turn can cause more kidney problems so drinking water all of the time with it is essential or it can cause an adrenal crisis which is treated with a saline drip in hospital to get fluid and electrolytes in fast. This can cause severe kidney damage.

I saw my GP this morning and we are going to try to temporarily increase my steroid (which is fake cortisol) to see if that helps for the summer. In the meantime he said drink as much as I can, including small amounts of salt and sugar in the water to try to help my kidneys and electrolytes, stay inside outside of the sun as much as I can (Hahahaha has he forgotten who he is talking to?), no vigorous exercise that needs an adrenaline burst (again, this is me!), and use cold compresses, cool showers and fans. Minimal stress is also essential (hello, ESA form?) because that also causes an adrenaline rush. He also suggested I contact my endocrinologist who may have some other ideas.

This is why I really don't get on with summer, it is a nightmare for people with Addison's disease. Short version-I feel like poo and I have no idea how I am going to get through the next few months if it stays this hot. My trip out on Sunday is off, I am far too weak and I really cannot be outside in the sun and away from a fan and cold showers right now. This is miserable, I need to keep hold of every bit of cortsiol I can.. Any ideas for keeping cool, stress free and drinking like a fish welcome!

Apparently you can make a diy airconditioner by sticking a shallow container (roasting tin type thing)full of ice cubes in front of the fan.
