Do I need to pay?

A bin cleaning service visits the estate I live on every four weeks however I do not use the service. They clean the bins shortly after they have been emptied by the council bin men. Today they cleaned my bin and put a bill for £3 through my letter box even though I was at home. Do I have to pay?

Basic contract law dictates there must be an offer and an acceptance of that offer - they can offer to clean your bin for £3 unless you accept that offer no contract has formed.

The likelihood is that its a mistake - get in touch and advise them you didn't and don't want to use their service.

    No, just ignore it.

If you did not request the service, then you do not have to pay.

Either ignore it, or send a letter thanking them for choosing to kindly clean your bin, but as you did not request nor require this service you will not be paying.

When we moved house, I discovered a man in our garden. Turns our the previous owner paid a window cleaner on a monthly basis, and they had no idea the house had been sold. They quickly stopped when I informed them of their mistake, and did not have to pay for all the front ones they had cleaned!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Thats a bit mean for an honest mistake. I would have paid them and then told them you dont require their services in the future.

I wouldn't have. I have sympathy for his honest mistake, but why on earth should it be my problem? If he had done something of any value to me, maybe I'd feel I should pay but a cleaned window is worthless to me which is why I don't pay someone to clean them.

If he had painted your entire house bright yellow as an honest mistake, having intended to do next door, would you pay him for it or expect him to rectify it?

    Each to their own.
  • Each to their own.

Why didn't you say "each to their own" instead of accusing the previous poster of being a "a bit mean" then?

You made an unsolicited moral judgement. I am telling you your moral judgement is wrong and what they did is entirely justifiable. I've made a case.

You made no case, just made a sweeping statement, and now are trying to get out of arguing a case that you have seen is unmakeable by saying "each to their own". Don't randomly criticise other people unless you are at least prepared to back your judgement.

I gave my opinion, yours differed.
