They may have a house fire regardless.....all tumble dryers are potentially dangerous... I had a dishwasher, it went up in smoke not due to a fault but due to the nature of the product.
A very small percentage have gone up in flames, how many have been confirmed its down to the issue in question?
There's no way that this extremely expensive repair programme would of started if there wasn't a very serious concern.

    Not this argument again :rotfl:
It's a very valid arguement though isn't it.

I'll let everyone else make their mind up, but personally I still think it's your own opinion casually thrown around and dressed up to look like a fact.

I mean, you've still not provided any solid evidence to support your claim that they "knew" about faulty machines for "11 years" and until you do then your argument has to be taken as an unsubstantiated opinion.

Any reasonable person would realise that they knew for long while before they were bought out. How could Whirlpool possibly purchase the company then suddenly find out that they had been making faulty products for 11 years, It's just beyond belief.

I don't have any proof but luckily there are many people with more power than me trying to discover when they knew.

When do you think they discovered the problem?

No one disagrees it shouldn't of happened but it has, they are now dealing with the problem as well as they can...
People just need to put things into perspective, it's a tumble dryer some people have them and some don't but regardless the problem is getting resolved but people will still be left with a piece of equipment that has the potential to go up in flames due to the very nature of its function.

You maybe right but then again you maybe wrong, I personally can't see a high-profile company spending years hiding such an issue then agree to sell on knowing it will be discovered... they can still face financial implications and now possible big league legal action when all they faced pre sell off was the cost of repairs.

If you buy something it should be safe to use, tumble driers are sold with delayed starts so they can be used unattended. Personally I turn as much off as possible when I'm out but many don't care.
It's a massive job to sort out this problem but they should of started earlier.

You cannot do anything about Joe Public not following maintenance advice thus turning a microscopical risk into a minor risk

That'ts fine, I suggest you turn the main breaker off when you leave the house. There is a record of fridges, freezers, CH boilers and just about anything else electrical causing house fires. You may also need to turn the gas off at thee main isolation point in case there is a an electrical failure with your gas cooker or gas CH that could cause a fire

And if they had then you would have seen the exact same arguments and kneejerk reactions at that time.

If it was all down to the public just causing the problem there wouldn't be a fix available.

True but we have to limit the risk as much as possible and as far as I know my insurance would pay out for any other appliance but probably not for a Hotpoint tumble drier.

I'd have far more sympathy if it was a shorter period of time.

    Getting back on topic ;)

Last night I went on the Hotpoint website
    http://www.hotpoint.co.uk/
Then at the bottom, under Help - contact us
Then near the bottom 'why are you contacting us' and chose 'Tumble Drier Safety Campaign'
I filled in the info and suggested that we needed a replacement 'vented sensor' model, but the replacements offered were either one or t'other but not both.
Phone rang here about 11am to book in the 'modification' (which was originally booked for September)
I asked if a replacement was still available - yes
Can I have a sensor vented - no
I said 'leave it with me, SWMBO will be back after lunch'
    They agreed to call back.

Will let you know how we get on .........
