Was in morrisons today, their English butter was still 56p, so i bought 4 packs (seeing that Tesco is now 78p)
  • Hi All,
I went into Morrison's today for my usual grocery shop and thought I'd check out the price of their butter.
Their Bettabuy was marked up at 53p.
Their own brand was marked up at 56p.
As it was only 3p dearer and I knew the price would soon be increasing, in line with the other shops, I bought 4 packs.

When I checked my receipt I had been charged 78p!!!

I went to C/S and explained that they were priced up at 56p but I had been charged 78p.
An assistant went to check and returned saying "no, the Bettabuy is priced on the shelf at 68p and own brand is 78p!"

I assured them that when I put the items in my trolley the prices were 100% 53p and 56p.
She said she would get her supervisor.
In the meantime, 3 other people joined the C/S queue complaining about being overcharged on Lurpak and Kerrygold butter!
One woman's husband went to check the butter aisle and returned saying "they are changing the prices as we speak!"

It didn't go down well at all, with one woman insisting on speaking to the manager because she said Trading Standards might be interested in the fact that Morrison's change their prices whilst their store is open!

I did get my refund - only 88p, but that's not the point.
I left before the Manager arrived but would love to know his explanation.

    So please check your receipts.....

  • Just a note on the price at the till.

Legally, stores do not have keep to the price on the shelf - they can charge you more at the till. This is not to say you shouldn't complain - and if they stick to the price on the shelf, that's great :) However, we have no legal right to demand that they charge the (lower) price shown on the shelf. If we don't like the price at the till, the store can simply refund what we've been charged and take the goods back.

Legally - the price on the shelf is an invitation for us to buy the goods. When we get to the till, the store offers the goods to us at a price - it's at that point that the legal contract is struck, not at the point we put the goods in the trolley.

Of course, many stores don't stick to there legal guns and will stick to the lower shelf price, but don't try to assert your legal rights too strongly as we don't have any.

Having said all of this, if a store repeatedly has many goods incorrectly priced, then Trading Standards may well be interested. But for one-off incidences, they won't be.

Our Morrisons are now charging 78p for their butter as well - lucky i bought 4 packs on Saturday!!!
  • Is it my imagination or did that price tag of Tesco 'value' butter - which now reads '85p' - read only 58p a few weeks ago..?

Have I been asleep for ten years or suchlike?
