My rolls from the bakers have gone up. It's only a penny each, but that's (a minimum of).... £120 a year

I don't mind paying a wee bit more... but they didn't even tell me in advance.

This is the thin end of a large wedge, named "agflation"

    Todays Times
"the fact that wheat prices have risen by nearly 50 per cent in the past three months, but a harbinger of higher food prices to come. For it is not just the cost of a tonne of wheat that is going up. The price of corn, rice and barley have all risen by over a third since 2005. After the long slump in commodities prices, the world is waking up to agflation."

just looked at tesco online and value butter has gone up from 53p to 70p... a big increase...

I would rather pay farmers a decent price for their produce... but in terms of major supermarkets... we know the farmers are not getting their money and then I begrudge it!!

  • I had noticed the rise in linguine as well - and a loaf of multigrain bread from the bakery has gone from 84p to £1.02 this morning - time to use the BM again, methinks.

But it's not only butter ronaldo. The knock on costs will affect everyone. Sandwich shops will have to pay more for bread, butter, fillings - that means price of eating lunch out goes up. These are basic ingredients, basic staple foods. Many people live on fixed incomes, butter has gone up by a third and flour by nearly a half - it doesn't take many rises like this to knock the treats budget for six.
