My gran was moaning about the rise in flour last week.
Getting there... A deal at a time. :T

  • And, whilst it's an unpalatable thought ..... if there were a war, we are land-locked. If we were, during war, dependent on imported food, we could literally starve :o
An interesting thought, as in 1939 we were indeed dependent on imported food hence the need for rationing and home production. Maybe we should put ourselves on rations...

i ordered butter from asda last night for delivery tomorrow, i usually get smartprice and it was 53p still.. however i noticed a twin pack of willow butter for 78p. So cheaper than smartprice.

I did notice prices of other things had gone up though like apples i usually buy gone up 2p a kilo.

Mum was only mentioning to me the other day how her bill in sainsburys was way more than she expected and she had to borrow extra money off my dad to pay for the bill even though she only bought her usuals, things had really shot up in price.. sometimes up to 20p in one go!

Its quite worrying for me as ive just had to go on benefits again (JSA) and my food budget is tiny.. but being pregnant i need a healthy diet and all the things i buy such as milk, fruit and veg and staples are all shooting up in price!! I wouldnt mind if it was luxury items as i cant afford them anyway.

I noticed signs in tesco fruitnveg section other day stating due to bad weather there was a shortage of british produce and they would be importing more from abroad to try to meet the shortage.
  • 'I don't see UK farming turning all their land over to wildlife. They get the SFP simply for leaving a margin along the edge of the field - they can still produce food. What we really need is for the UK shopper to understand what they're buying and to appreciate the real value of British Food. And to recognise that their food will be vastly different if it's all imported.' Debt_Free_Chick

I agree, I don't think many farmers would want to turn over their land wildlife they are however, being romanced into producing less through the SFP. Its a points based system that rewards land owners to embrace increased hedges, ponds, rivers, wild flowers etc that has nothing at all to do with production levels.
The leaving of a margin of land used to be promoted (an old subsidy called set aside) when farmers had been encourgaed to leave x amount of land to nature. Rather than leaving a whole field farmers just left a metre or so around each field and still got the subsidy. You still see it happening today because it increases production throughout the whole field anyway.

Our country would not beable to produce eanough food to feed the nation due to a decrease in farming (land and production) and an increase in the UK population. An increase in production of bio-crops is also a masive threat to UK food production.

I think this country has gone too far now to go back and most of the UK consumers in this country want cheaper food, in season or not all year round.
  • Tesco value butter is 53p and so is tesco value unsalted butter. Netto and Lidl also do holly bush butter for 53p.Hope that helps, i've been using the tesco unsalted quite a lot as its taking salt away that nobody is noticing, so a little change for no effort!

Just had a look at my Tesco receipt from 30/8/07 and the value flour was 43p.
  • When I was in Tescos on Saturday I noticed that some things were a lot cheaper than they used to be. I know they weren't grown in the UK but Value bananas were 39p and Granny Smith apples 44p. Obviously I chose the cheaper versions as they looked just as good as the more expensive ones. What worries me is how little the growers must be getting paid.

When I have access to British produce I am prepared to pay more for it to help keep our farmers in business, but like most people I have a budget to stick to.
