Money Moral Dilemma: Should we ask the cleaner to pay for a new vacuum?

If you want a real moral dilemma try asking the energy suppliers why they dont automatically adjust the tariff you are on to the lowest. my friends who are both elderly and can barely hear the phone, have been paying premium prices to EON not knowing that they have been paying hundred of pound more than they needed too each year or are large companies exempt from morals especialy with the elderly ( oh and before i get the well you should ring for them i sat in their home with both husband and wife and was kept on hold by EON for a little over 35 mins at which point the line went dead this is the second time)0

I hired a carpet cleaning service. A one-man job - only £40 to clean a few rooms. I clearly warned him that he should call me to help him move the sofa in order to clean underneath and not drag it along the carpet as that could damage the legs.
He ignored me and moved the sofa and broke the leg. So I did tell him I would send him the repair bill, but it was about £200, and I never bothered. However, don't you think I would be justified to bill him? I'd rather have cleaned the carpets myself than have a £2000 leather sofa damaged!0 -
This is an interesting one, as recently we have had a situation whereby our exceedingly reliable cleaner ruined a carpet and an iron. We never did get to the bottom of how- she said it "fell" but there is carpet welded to the iron, and 4 burn marks on the carpet in different places. We didn't make her pay for the iron, but did ask for a contribution towards the carpet. As it turns out, her husband has a trade account and her cousin is a carpet fitter so she is doing the whole lot. Personally I would find out exactly what happened, and consider asking the cleaner for a contribution after explaining that it was a newish appliance. Equally I would look at what was covered under the warranty, as if it really is that new then it shouldn't break easily.
LOL - you say this is a reliable cleaner but they can't explain how your carpet got burned by an iron in 4 different places????? Really?????
Gosh I'd sack your cleaner like a ton of bricks - that is not reliable or trustworthy in my opinion - what the hell are they getting up to instead of cleaning properly?0 -
Hoovers break so easily nowadays I think it is unfair to blame your cleaner and expect them to pay towards a new one.
Our hoover is less than 10 months old and has broken 3 times already - it's one of the worst ones we have bought, but definitely the worst one was the most expensive Dyson - I'd never buy another one from them as it was absolute rubbish, I spent half my life on their phone lines getting replacement parts sent - really annoying and a very bad company.
I think you should check your receipt to see how old it is and if it's over a year and out of guarantee then buy a new one yourself and I would not ask the cleaner to contribute, they're usually on quite a low wage - if you're paying an agency they won't be receiving all the money at all.0 -
No way, you supply the tools and you replace them if and when needed or employ a cleaner who supplies and uses their own kit.0

you can't do that as you allowed someone else to freely use your property, so you take the consequence of 'your' actions.
How'wd you feel if your boss charged you for your computer if it packed up?
All the info is on this site-
1)Buy your vacuum with a nationwide credit card which cover all electrical goods for another year on top of manufacturers warrantee (over £50)
2)Buy a cleaner from Argos- either their value range and several other cleaners which come in under £50- they'll last reasonably well & you'd be less upset if they didn't
3) Finally buy a more robust vacuum - many cleaners use the red one with a face- named after a famous king with 6 wives. It often has a long lifespan.0 -
I concur with everybody else who has expressed their disgust in the attitude behind this "dilemma".
For the record:
Is it under warranty? If "yes", use the warranty. If "no", buy a new one.
I feel really sorry for your cleaner :-(0
