So another waste of time debate as Opposition Day debates have a vote which is non-binding on the government as far as I'm aware.

My prediction - Labour/SNP MPs regurgitating Waspi sob stories with fiction presented as fact, no costed solutions by any opposition MP and nothing achieved at the end.

My understanding too is that votes on opposition day motions are not binding.

The impression from the Labour MPs is that they are trying to put it on the government to put forward proposals. They are doing their best to avoid admitting that they are focusing on the 2011 Act, and that realistically means-testing would be part of any workable solution. There is far more political mileage in continuing the charade that they are fighting for all 1950s women.

I hope I'm wrong, but all signs are pointing towards another meaningless exercise in grandstanding and cringeworthy references to waspis stinging.

    Did anyone watch the debate?

Was it more of the 'same old, same old'?

It's making me angry just to read it.
[Vara]: ... a reduction in the time period from two years to 18 months at a cost of £1.1 billion. That shows that the Government were listening to the concerns of Members and responded to them at the time.

Carolyn Harris (Swansea East) (Lab): Exactly how much of that money went to the women concerned?

Mr Vara: The hon. Lady needs to appreciate that the concept of dealing with pensions and money is that the concession was made—

Carolyn Harris: I know the answer. How much?

Mr Vara: That concession was made by the taxpayer—[Interruption.] It was made by the taxpayer, and the total cost was £1.1 billion—

    Carolyn Harris: How much?

ALL OF IT, THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS

*Edit: What feels like many hours later results in this:
Angela Rayner: I thank the hon. Gentleman for his intervention. I hope that the Minister will answer that question. Just over a £1 billion was put in. According to my research, over half of that was for men.

So I finally understand: they're angry that men disadvantaged by exactly the same measures got some benefit of the transitional arrangements. And if they got more than half, it is because they accrued more state pension in the first place and therefore were missing out, on average, more than women by the 2011 accelerated increases to SPA.

    Inequality, indeed.
