Great fun. You push a large net along the floor of the sea at low tide to sweep up shrimps. We've also caught baby plaice and a whole host of other marinelife ... most of which go back.

Some great photos here taken not so far away at Shoreham.

Yes - I think kids could do it, but with a smaller net like this one but if you look at the "design" they're relatively easy to put together.

  • aw thats just fab. I really want to have a go at that now lol.

what do you do with the shrimps/prawns, do you put them back in or do you take them home and eat them? :)

  • Take them home and eat them!! Home made potted shrimp are delicious.

But I warn you ... they are small and very fiddly to peel!

Silly question but, there's nothing poisonous that I could mistake for a shrimp? and nothing that would sting? (sorry, big jelly fish paranoia etc)

  • Shrimp are definitely unmistakable :)

Sometimes jellyfish, but normally small and easily spotted. The Sussex Wildlife Trust have shrimping events. Or just watch and ask others, the first time you go. Most shrimpers will "show you the ropes" and tell you what to look out for.

  • Cool, thanks for that, in true moneysaving fashion we might have a free supper!

    LOL

  • We moved to Bexhill last sept from Redhill, not really knowing the area at all, so not all old people! In fact most people that I have spoken to have moved to the area and not born here!

We love it, being a five minute walk from the beach - still exploring, not tried out the Dominoes yet, but got a bit excited when we heard it was opening!

I remember visiting Winchelsea when I was little, so I'm looking forward to the warmer weather to do some exploring.

On News Years Day, we went to Hastings, we parked the car near the castle and had a great walk round 'Old Town' really lovely, well worth the walk through the narrow pathways. We also went to the Museum there and the kids loved that with the quiz sheets. There was also a drum band playing through the streets, and kids loved walking along with chips in paper!

How old are your children? I was worried about my oldest (year 3) settling in, but she's coming out of school with a smile on her face. The youngest started reception and she loves it. There is more of a community feel about the place.

I'm currently looking for a part time job, but that seems to be a bit challenging!

Any more tips for living by the sea - I got a bit confused between high and low tide

  • Hi Bananajkinz

How cool someone else from the area. Have you tried the bexhill online community forums? let me know I will send you the link. FYI low tide is when you can see sand and high tides when you can't see the pebbles all that much LOL. Apparently theres some good rockpooling to be done on the far end of bexhill at low tide but I've not been there yet!!

You absolutely MUST try the dominos. I know they are not the cheapest Pizza place around but they are good. they have an internet offer on at the moment, 3 x 9 " pizzas, any variety for £5.99 (each!) delivered. We did it the other night and they were excellent :) I felt well fat when I'd done.

My little girls have settled into school nicely, making friends etc took a week or two but they are OK now. the little boy is a rising five at nursery so goes into reception class next year.

They miss the farm we used to live on, but they have a much more active social life here. they have started playing football for sovereign saints at hampden park on a saturday morning, its free, and if you don't mind mud or football its a good way to get them exercising!!

We went for a walk at low tide this afternoon. My youngest boy just charged into the sea right up to his bottom. He's a nutter it was so windy his teeth were chattering and I had to take him home. My eldest girl had a real find though, a clam shell that was the size of an adult hand, I thought you only found them that big in the carribean etc

  • We had a lovely time on the beach in the wind last tues, just for half an hour! Wrapped up warm and just got blown away, came home to hot chocolates - it was the roughest I've ever seen the sea - its fab such a total different way of life, even DH has got a bike which I didn't think we would ever see :rotfl: and we cycle into 'town' up Galley Hill which is hard for the little one without gears on her bike!

Don't think I've got a link to the community forums, although the freecycle has had some good stuff on it - shame I'm not looking for anything at the moment! Doing our best not to fill the house for a little while!

Glad to hear that your girls have now settled, it all takes time, I think the only people I speak to most days are briefly at the school at pick up time - good thing I have t'internet
