A further thought Mortgage Mamma ....
when you visit, try and pick up a copy of the Parish Magazine, usually available in the village shop or local church. It can usually give you a flavour of local life - ditto, the Parish Council minutes available from the Parish Council Clerk. Their details may be in the Parish Magazine or on the local noticeboard, or I think I posted a link to the list of local Parish Councils previously
Go into the local Church - although CoE, our church has a number of publications of local historical interest, which can give you a feel for the history and culture of the local community.
Visit the village pub - in our village, one needs to spend 50% of one's time in the pub and 50% of one's time in the Church to "get the lowdown".
Finally, you need to pick up the Wealden Advertiser relevant to the East of the county - especially for property.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
aw brilliant thanks I have book marked that site as there could be letting on there not advertised elsewhere so thanks
I think I'd need more than a week to get to know the village pubs, I'm not very good at making new friends or mixing with those i don't already know but I'll give it a shot. I'll be visiting three times before I move anyway so will have plenty of opportunity to check outI am a Mortgage Adviser

Don't know how far away this is, but my friend who lives in Seaford is a Deputy Head there. My husband used to teach with him in the Midlands, he is an excellent teacher and enjoys the school. AFAIK it is an excellent school, I don't think he would work in a bad one.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Hiya MM,
I've found: www.findaproperty.com , www.homesandproperty.co.uk and www.lettingsearch.co.uk (the last one is just for East Sussex).
The Treacle Mine is another 2 for 1 pub, so the food should be ok but not been there myself so don't know about any play areas. It's right on the now huge Cophall Farm roundabout which is the A22/A27 junction really.
Happy house-hunting!!!

Hastings is lovely and there are very good schools here (I have 2 kids in secondary) I moved down from London 6 years ago. Property is better value here aswell and there are some very nice places just out of town. It's about 25 mins to Hailsham via back roads and 40 mins Eastbourne, (I have just applied for a job in Eastbourne). Lots to do for kids without being too busy. I agree the A259 between hastings and bexhill can be a nightmare but there are quiter rural roads even in rush hour that can bypass all that. Hastings does have a bad name but I wouldn't live anywhere else. Honestly!!0
