Unlikely. The legal position in the UK is that the Republic of Ireland is not considered to be 'foreign'.
Also there were border checkpoints while we have both been in the EEC if some of the older folk remember. I'll safely say that were the UK to leave the EU (and I don't think it will), there will be no change to the border arrangements in NI.
Hi Duggan,
Certainly in no way doubting your statement, however is there documented evidence that indicates the UK doesn't recognise the ROI as a foreign entity?0 -

Personally for better or worse atomic bombs have all but ended any type of global war and not the EU.Hi Duggan,

There has never been any restriction on employment , residence, voting or military service on Irish citizens in the uk. That's as close to conjoined twin status as you can get. Irish citizens will be voting in the referendum. Polish will not.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -

The EU didn't stop the war in the Balkans in the 1990's and the EU policy of Empire expansion Eastwards has in fact contributed to the War in The Ukraine.
You might want to thank NATO for keeping the peace in Europe since 1949..
The Balkans was not part of the eu. Yes, I think the eu has been instrumental in providing stability through mutual dependence and cooperation. It's nato's eastern expansion to the Russian borders, including Russian speaking areas in the baltics, that has been a less than stabilising approach, I'd say.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -

Can you educate me on how the EU can be reformed when the UK's voting rights are diminished with every new country that joins?.There is no will to reform the EU in my opinion in the same way its almost impossible to reform the UK Parliament. In fact when Turkey joins (which it will) they wil have more voting rights than we currently do. There are very few net contributors to the EU budget with the UK being one of them,2nd biggest in fact so we will have less influence in policy making whilst paying an ever increasing amount to stay in the club.
They have spent the best part of 30 years trying to reform the EU and failed so just remember when you tick that "stay" box on the ballot paper you are condemning your children, grand children to an even worse relationship with the EU than we have now. My priority in voting is for the futures of my children and their children and I will vote to leave.
The EU was working fine as a trading block but the Federalists chose to take us down the road to a United States Of Europe and it will happen. It could have worked but the moment they let Greece in and the Eastern European countries the whole EU project is doomed to fail.
Are you aware that Poland alone has been given more money in EU grants than the entire budget to re-build the whole of Europe post WW2?. Its a staggering amount of money and I'm sorry but I would prefer the money we currently give to the EU each year to be spent on the people of the UK .
Currently we donate just under £11 billion (Eleven ,thousand, million pounds a year) and thats net contributions, not gross. This amount is set to increase by around £3.1 billion within the next 5yrs.
BTW the money we save can be used to help the UK industries to grow or continue to trade and that includes agriculture, fisheries, heavy industry, technologies etc.Think of how many houses we can build with that money, hospitals, roads, schools etc.
So let's just abandon it and reject it all as a waste? Surely that's more of a reason to get it right?
Turkey is probably moving further away from eu membership. It's not going to happen.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -
I'm fairly sure that customs checkpoints will be back. I remember growing up in Donegal in the 80s and there being long tailbacks with lorries being checked at places like Lifford (admittedly, they were probably being checked for more than smuggled fags, but you had to go through an army checkpoint and then a customs one). Although there's no restriction on employment and freedom of movement, the Irish government isn't going to forego excise duties! There was a huge customs presence in Donegal and other border counties until the mid 90s. Most Irish revenue staff are now based at the ports but the border could have huge smuggling potential if the UK exits.0

. I doubt it. Are companies going to avoid higher labour costs? Are consumers going to pay the higher prices? Again, grand concept but I can see a lot of pain before any gain.
.
If companies are paying higher wages and the employees are paying more then the nett change is Zero? (although perhaps the money is staying in the country instead of being filtered abroad to all those tax avoiding companies we love to hate?)0 -

That is the way the exit camp might have us think. However, as a manufacturer, I can tell you that consumers are very slow to accept price rises. I would suggest that sharp price hikes could be sufficiently popular that a business could be out of business before the consumer comes to accept them! Would the unemployed brits even be willing to do these jobs? They just got rid of the migrants, why would they want to have to get up in the morning and go to work when they are used to getting paid to stay at home (sorry, I know a bit off the topic, but conceptually not far from true)?
My sentiment remains unchanged with anything I have read since this has come up. There are good arguments to leave but there is absolutely nothing in the way of facts, figures, projections (or whatever) which make me feel the slightest bit convinced that a plan exists. I cannot help but think that the exit campagners, should they win, would sit down the next day and (only) then consider how precisely they should proceed.
Come on people - this is being sold like a product marketing campaign. We need to know the truth, winning votes with hollow appeals against publically acknowledged 'Euro wrongs' is not in our best interest. To fail to provide facts and figures can mean only that the data does not exist or it does not support your view. Either way, that should be known.Always overestimating...0 -

If you think leaving a UK government with no oversight from a superior body will lead to less tax avoidance, you're nuts
Well, maybe under Labour...0 -
