We made a nice steak dinner and choc strawberries last night. We went out for lunch with friends today. As for cards and presents, we stopped doing that the year we both got the same cards just the male/female version. We realised it was just a waste of time.
  • We've never 'done' Valentines either, OH bought me a nice present and flowers the first one we were together but its gone by unnoticed since. I might treat my self to a bunch of reduced flowers tomorrow if I see any good ones, I'd be annoyed If he'd gone and spent fifty odd quid on a bunch for me!

If it was down to me, I wouldn't bother. However, Mrs G expects at least a card so I dutifully comply.

We don't bother either, you should show someone you love them every day, not just one day a year. It's the little touches that show someone you care.

You can show each other that you love them every day plus Valentines Day surely? Me and OH do

We haven't done Valentines day for years either. It was my birthday 3 days before and I get flowers from OH for that so they are still going strong!! He does get annoyed at having to pay more due to time of year. We have been married 34 years. Both of us agreed years ago that Valentines day is fun for youngsters and we did do it in the early days of our relationship but it gets a bit stale when you have been together as long as we have. I think we stopped when our income dropped after having children almost 30 years ago now! Just another day to me.

OH often buys me flowers and he bought me some for Valentines Day. He didn't pay any more for them today then he usually does.

I don't agree that it gets stale at all. We have been married for almost 36 years and think it is great to celebrate it.

We buy or make eachother cards but I have told him I do not want flowers or chocolates as they are not very original. I have kept all the Valentine's, birthday, anniversary and thank you cards in a scrap book.

We hate the day, it is such a con and we laugh at all the suckers that bankrupt themselves and post pictures all over social media about his one day.

It's only a con if you let it be. You can get any sort of present - cd, dvd, book etc. Even if you get chocolates or flowers they don't have to cost more than they would normally.

We gave each other a card, mine to OH cost me £1 at the market but it has lovely words. OH bought me flowers and a bottle of Baileys (which was on offer). We went out for a lovely walk then to the cinema and then for a meal. We didn't opt for the Valentines menu so our meal was exactly the same price as it would have been yesterday. It was a lovely day.

We often give each other presents, cards etc and go out for days, meals etc so are not making an effort just for the sake of it

I've only been seeing someone about 6 weeks so a well awkward time for Valentine's day to fall. Luckily he's working so meant neither of us needed to bring the subject up. :-)

He sent me a happy Valentine's pic/message which was spot on.

I've never done the pressies and going out thing though in any relationship I've had, just given it a token nodding, sometimes cards exchanged, mostly not. Can see why others like to do stuff though, why not? Who knows how I will feel next year, just have to wait and see...

I have just remembered a gift my ex surprised me with once, (not Valentines).
It was long ago when our children were small, not much money. He saved some tokens from, I think, oxo cubes and sent for a free recipe book. it was the thought that was put in and not the fact it was a recipe book. He cared enough to give me a surprise, as he did years down the line when he had an affair :rotfl:

Hubby and I reused an old valentine card and put a new message in it. ( my family liked my money saving idea and are all doing the same). Hubby went to Iceland bought a dinner meal deal with free prosecco and cooked me a surprise meal. I bought him a present (normally we don't spend anymore than £2-3 but I spotted some Jeans in his size ( he is 6ft 4inches and has an inside leg of 34') so I couldn't pass them up.
