Pity but presumably the really long sincere abject apology you got from DWP made up for it ?:D
For what? There was a bank account wasn't there? They didn't have the wrong information, they didn't link information with the wrong person. It appears no mistake was made. It doesn't even sound like anyone was hounded.

They had information to suggest the existence of a different bank account and they were right.

They had information about interest that suggested the possibility of a rather large credit balance. They investigated and the matter appears to have been clarified as a result.

Sounds exactly like how it should work.

It certainly sounded as if the OP was hounded to me. They accused the OP of hiding money, they refused to help with details, they even "could not discuss it with the OP".

This must surely be a common enough occurrence they could investigate at source themselves and cut out the ridiculous shenanigans and worry they've put on the OP. Even in this tiny forum soemone else has had the same, so the DWP must therefore see this many times a day. So why create the drama?

Similar happened to me also, many years ago, accusing me (and I use the words advisedly) of concealing money from the tax man. It turned out to be a forgotten Post Office savings account that has been closed down years previously and was a tax free account anyway.

An analogy for now would be accusing someone of concealing money and not reporting interest and then it turns out, its all in an ISA which they should know is not eligible for tax. The process took about 3+ months to clear up. Aside the aggravation it cause me, that was resources they could have used following up actual tax evaders.

I think you're mistaking raising an investigation and asking a legitimate question for an accusation.

It's just like that other thread here about single parents getting 'threatening' letters
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5175740

Some people kindly reproduced the letters and they are not the least threatening.

I wouldn't mind if it were an assumption, but I was given an exact balance and it is way more than 8 times my PPI refund, they have stated in the hundreds of thousands region !!!!

You stated the amounts where in more than one account and the total was hundreds of thousands....8 x more than you actually received in a PPI refund?

But how would they know it was an ISA without investigating?
The financial institution at which the account was held might recognise an ISA account by some part of the account number. But how would anyone outside that institution know it?

See, that's the problem sometimes. People assume authorities have information when they don't.
