Isn't it strange to have Bank accounts linked with a NI number? I've never been asked for my NI to set a up an account?

    Always required for ISA accounts.
  • They may have you under RIPA so beware they can read this as well.

Have you at anytime in the last 6 years had a PPI claim paid out against barclays loans or underwritten by barclays?

I have a very good reason for asking this which I will explain if you have.

I seem to remember that many years ago, Barclays offered very good rates on cash ISAs but I can't recall whether they were fixed term.

The OP mentions that he used to hold accounts with Barclays - I suppose it is possible that he closed a current account but left term ISAs and simply forgot to close them. The letter/number combination for the accounts might reflect this.

This seems unlikely if large sums were involved but not impossible - I once had a job which included dealing with returned warrants (holder not traced etc) and the sums involved were often rather high......
  • I have since been to my local Barclays branch who have been unable to locate them as currently active accounts, however they have advised me to claim through mylosyaccount website in case they are lost or dormant accounts, I have made these claims which I was told would take up to 12 weeks for a reply!
    .

Hmm I wonder if the bank teller was just trying to fob you off because they couldn't easily find it. Do you remember the address you lived at when you had the account? That might be a way to find it. Or if you hunt through your stuff to find an old bank statement.

I used to work for another High Street bank and we could see old dormant accounts on the system and the balance.

I just ticked the No box when asked for my National Insurance Number. I've never been issued with one and I have an ISA.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

OP, Could this be a Data Quality mistake? i.e. Barclays entered your National Insurance by mistake when they created the accounts in question. Maybe your NI number varies very slightly to someone elses' (the owner of the account)? Three scenarios (there are more) could of happened (if it is a data quality mistake):

    1) Person x called and specified your NI number by mistake when opening the account.
    2) Person x called and specified their correct NI number. However person y (the operator) misunderstood the NI number and entered it incorrectly.

Have you had a look at your credit report? If I was you I would check your credit report. Go to: Noddle (https://www.noddle.co.uk/), Clearscore (https://www.clearscore.com/) and Experian (http://www.experian.co.uk). Clearscore and Noodle are free. Experian is free for the first 30 days (so you could cancel within 30 days if you wanted to and pay nothing). You should be able to see what bank accounts are linked to your report.

DWP have provided account numbers which Barclays say aren't currently valid format. Do Barclays say they are in previous account formats or are they saying that the information provided by DWP is not in a format which has ever matched their accounts? If they are old format, and dormant, that will hopefully be enough to convince DWP that they are account you had no knowledge of, even if they are yours. You would probably have to pay back money you received from DWP but that should be all.
Hi, they didn't actually say they were or were not in a Barclays account format, just that the search was inconclusive for any currently existing accounts.

Just a thought - don't know whether you are male or female and or if you have thought of this already!

Since the 'lost' accounts appear to have been data matched by your NI number have you tried asking Barclays if there are any accounts in your maiden name or from previous addresses.

Am sure you have thought of this but just in case!

Have the DWP given you any dates re: these bank accounts?
Hi, I am male so no maiden name, they haven't provided any other information other than account numbers!

Hi, I have had a PPI refund from Barclays regarding a loan within the last 5 years, but why should this have anything to do with this?
    Thanks.
