Problem solved, didnt have to make a SORN, my partner's insurer, Admiral, have insured it for £45 for 28 days, and will refund the remainder if car is sold in a week, result!

That's not bad at all, good luck with the sale :)

I saw a car get clamped by DVLA for no tax in a private car park of a retail park in Dundee. DVLA can and will recover SORNd vehicles from car parks not owned by local authority.

Have you stopped to consider that they owner did not have permission to park it there and the land owner reported it as abandoned?

They can clamp or remove unlicensed vehicles from those locations, but not a vehicle that is has a SORN as that is an exemption for the requirement for the vehicle to be licensed.

    Why trade insurance?

It won't cover the lack of tax.

I had trade insurance and trade plates so no issues buying untaxed vehicles.

We can also enforce untaxed vehicles on any land where the public has access, for example:

Car parks or parking areas- includes stores, supermarkets, works, and council. Permission to store the vehicle there is irrelevant

Your local ASDA carpark for instance ... Is still subject to the RTA.

I beleive the distinction is, if the carpark has gates that could be closed, even if they never are, then it is classed as private land, onto which the public are invited at times to suit the owner of the land. The public therefore have no 'right' of access.

Unless the vehicle is exempt and not on a public road, e.g.. SORN.

No one has ever claimed that asda car park is not subject to the RTA. However as its not maintainable at public expense it's not a road for vehicle excise purposes.

You're wrong about the gates too. Private land is private land, but I'll say it again for you. It can be a public place for the RTA if there is access to the public even if they have to pay.

I didnt write anything in that post. One quote was text from a local authority and the second was one police officer advising another on a police officers forum

You quoted if and its wrong. So that make you wrong. If the gates are open the public have access, it may change if the are actually closed.

But then again maybe it's correct as it was posted on the web. ;)
