Did they still build wooden framed house - I thought they had a bit of a bad rep?

When we had our extension once the groundwork was done the walls and roof were very quick - then it seemed to really slow down once they started on the inside....

Becoming more and more popular. They had a bad rep for a time but with building regulations tightening constantly, it will become hard to meet regulations in blockwork without having very thick walls. Timber frame with a suitable exterior cladding is energy efficient, slightly quicker to put up. It was the domain of self-builders but all the new builds near us are now timber. That won't be for energy efficiency though, I suspect it's all about labour time on site. The big developers aren't bothered about anything but numbers.

re: timing of shell vs. fit out, that's exactly how it is. The shell is quite quick to erect but the devil is in the detail.

Thanks for the expert info DG. I guess we will soon start to see even more of our homes built in factories - it has got to be more efficient.

I am not surprised the inside takes longer, especially with an extension where you have to join the old and new together and as we were living in the old, keep everything working all the time.
    I think....

Anybody see the Warwick Davis (Star Wars midget fella) in Who Do You Think You Are? last night. It was "lightweight" from a "serious researcher's" perspective, but a pleasant and entertaining watch.

He was on the same flight back to the UK as me last month. When he walked to the gate he was absolutely mobbed by the public. Seemed a really nice guy in spite of all that though.

I think I just found my first "dirty awld bugg4h" in the tree.

    Dirty awld bugg4h :)

Whenever you first mention 'tree', I forget that you're talking about your ancestral research!

My first thought this time was that there was a workman up a tree on the building site next door leering at you! :rotfl:

Went into London today for a meal not too far from a previous NP get-together. Strange thing was a mob of kids on bikes came riding down the street (both sides) forcing the traffic to a standstill. Where they started off from I've no idea. There's not tons of residential housing near that area.

Half of my street is one way, and the other half is two way.

The other day I was coming out of my house just as two cyclists were slowly riding by, abreast, and chatting as they went.

They passed my house and instead of turning left or right, gaily continued to cycle, still abreast, the wrong way up the one-way part.

I get so mad when cyclists blatantly flout the road rules like that.

    Will delete if you want.

You could give the cops a ring to find out, under the guise of is "it safe to go out into my garden?"

Talking of which, I wouldn't go out there until you know for sure, and make sure all your doors and windows are bolted.
