I believe they were invented a few years earlier
As America's "new" somebody probably decided that the route needed to be right there, so no time to spend 600-800 years creating a footpath round it.
It was probably the original route and maybe horses could pick their way round it, but, then, as traffic built up, they decided the growing volume of carts couldn't manage.
Have to compare/check the actual year it was cut I guess.
EDIT: I looked it up. The area was only "discovered" in 1857. The hole was cut in 1895 for coaches/tourists - so it was really for marketing it to tourists.... big hole, they had a reason to go there.
The one 100 miles away that fell down in 1969 was cut in 1881, so there was already a precedent for somebody to do that/think it a good idea. So they just copied it.
It would have been quite a feat to cut a hole that big with hand tools. So, it might have been a tourist attraction. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Thanks all. The journey back was ok, first train cancelled but they're fairly frequent...
It went well I'm happy to say! I got home and opened up my email to send the woman an email to say thanks etc. and she'd got back to me to ask if I can do a second interview with the MD on Friday!
So that's great
Well done, Mas, and good luck for the journeys and interview on Friday.
It's due to be a bit windy up here tomorrow. Am debating whether to be blown to work big-style on the bike, or to walk. I loathe walking to work (about 20-25 mins) but it would probably be safer in the morning if the weather warning is anything to go by.0 -

Are there objects on the way that might get blown down by the wind and land on top of you? If so, you could minimise the risk by completing the journey as rapidly as possible. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Yay! Well done Masomnia, and good luck for Friday.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0
