Thanks all. The journey back was ok, first train cancelled but they're fairly frequent...
It went well I'm happy to say! I got home and opened up my email to send the woman an email to say thanks etc. and she'd got back to me to ask if I can do a second interview with the MD on Friday!

Sounds very positive. When I went for a job interview in inner herts I was not at all sure I wanted the job because it was extremely inconvenient from where I was living in London...so of course I got the job and am still here mumble mumble years later.
And I really am here today, given the tube strike and no meetings today my 'holiday' has sort of lasted an extra day as I am in the local office.I think....0 -

No longer 2016 but for some reason this made me sad:

I was sad too when I read that. I'd seen the black/white photos over the years.
Maybe somebody will crowdfund to get it put back up, allbeit dead, with metal stakes/concrete in the ground .... just because it's possible if you've enough people willing to pay for it. Even if it's just the bottom 20-30 feet ....0 -

It is sad, yes, especially as carving the road through it helped its demise.
However, that carving was done 137 years ago, and the tree was very old. Everything has its time. At least it was a force of nature that did for it in the end,
I would have been far madder if it had been humans that had felled it, poisoned it or whatever.(I just lurve spiders!)

I read somewhere that it had been lifting on one side for a good few years. Interesting fact, redwoods have roots that are only a few feet deep.
Doozer can use this as an example of people saying building regs don't matter because the wall has stood for 10 years without a problem etc.
You do wonder why it needed a hole the size for a car before cars were invented.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Horse and cart.
I believe they were invented a few years earlier
As America's "new" somebody probably decided that the route needed to be right there, so no time to spend 600-800 years creating a footpath round it.
It was probably the original route and maybe horses could pick their way round it, but, then, as traffic built up, they decided the growing volume of carts couldn't manage.
Have to compare/check the actual year it was cut I guess.
EDIT: I looked it up. The area was only "discovered" in 1857. The hole was cut in 1895 for coaches/tourists - so it was really for marketing it to tourists.... big hole, they had a reason to go there.
The one 100 miles away that fell down in 1969 was cut in 1881, so there was already a precedent for somebody to do that/think it a good idea. So they just copied it.0 -
Most of the tree's functionally dead anyway, only about 1% is alive, and that'll be mostly near the top.
Can't see why cutting a hole in its base would be a good idea. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
I watched An Island Parish, Anguilla tonight. Thought I'd catch it after that chat about it on here.
