I was in the wide awake club last night, ended up sleeping 4-8am.
While in the wide awake club I checked the calories of my "just a flapjack" and it was 960 calories. At 2am this knowledge didn't prevent me having a packet of Xmas Food crisps0 -
I hadn't realised how gas and electricity prices had gone up.
My 1-year fix ends this month and I'm doing some comparison, including looking at quidco & topcashback. And then there's the crystal ball for whether to fix for another year, or 2 or 3.
Staying with current provider (Scottish Power) till March 18 is £640. [Up from £593 if compared to expiring tariff].
SSE, after £69 cashback (must use within next day) would be: £613 for a year, £652 for 2 years with £50 exit fee within the first 12 months, and £631 for 3 years (£50 exit fee for the whole period).
Had a look at EDF with their £80 cashback, but it's not as good. And not keen on some of the smaller companies such as First Utility owing to poor reviews.
Argh.
With your deal choices the 3 year fix looks quite reassuring and the 50 quid lock in is not terrible, if prices do fall then the quidco/tcb from switching to a new tariff will cover most of this.
However part of the reason for cost increases are probably temporary issues with French power stations and uk winter gas storage...
I'm not being much help am I?I think....0 -
I was with First Utility for a while, although I got a cheaper deal with Sainsbury's energy on the most recent "Martin says everybody switch now" last autumn. I didn't have any trouble with them.I have been with first-utility an other small suppliers and never had any issues. I believe the worst supplier for problems is the very big nPower.

Thanks both of you (I can't seem to do smillies here but there would be one if I could!!)
I've been looking at First Utility in the light of your comments. I must also confess to dodgy maths above ... I'd deducted the cashback from the annual costs; which of course is the correct net annual cost if the tariff is a year long, but is wrong where the fix is longer as the cashback needs to be spread over the duration of the fix. Duh!!
So, breaking it down to yearly cost after cashback apportioned, I guess it comes down to:
Scottish Power for 1 year = £641 p.a.
SSE for 1 year = £614 p.a. (£683 - £69 cashback).
SSE for 3 years = £667 p.a. (£700 - (£69/3 cb))
First U for a year = £562 p.a. (£662 - £100 cb)
First U for 16 months = £610 p.a. (£685 - £100/16*12 cb))
First U for 3 years = £670 p.a. (£703 - £100/3 cb)
I think I've been persuaded by you to go for the First Utility, 16 months!0 -

Hello all. Got a job interview tomorrow
It's in Inner Herts; can't seem to keep away.
It's exactly the kind of job that I would have wanted to go for in 2 - 3 years time after broadening my experience a bit. I think I'll be a bit out of my depth, but they've got my CV and they wouldn't have asked me for an interview if they didn't think there was something there that they were looking for.
If I'm honest, 6 months ago I'd have said that this would be the dream opportunity, but now that I'm here I just can't seem to get enthused about it. I don't know if it's just that I don't want to get my hopes up, or that I'm just feeling a bit down and under-confident at the moment.
I think right now I just need to get some temporary work and then have a think about what to do.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0
