Chrome also allows me to right-click and select "open in new tab".

Pyxis - we can explain if we know where to start. Do you know what tabs are? Are you familiar with having several open at once?

The thing is, I only have an iPad. And I use Safari.

The next thing is, if I click on a link, I go to that link. Then if I touch the back arrow, I'm back on this page.

The third thing is....If I click and hold the link, the option to open in a new tab comes up, and a tab appears at the top. Clicking on that takes me to the link, and then clicking on the tab for this page returns me to this page. Using the tab doesn't seem to confer any benefit over just clicking on the link as per my second comment, in fact it takes longer.

    That's why I don't understand it.

Maybe it's different with PCs and/or desktops computers?

My ipad is the same, Pyxis, but I mostly use chrome. The complaint is that just touching the link used to open it in a new tab. Now, it opens in the MSE tab.

    So the sequence is now
    Click on link
    Look at it
Close the tab, as one is used to.
    Gasp of exasperation or worse!
Open a new tab and navigate back to MSE.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Nope. Don't understand the 'close the tab' bit!

Why is my iPad so different? Maybe it's because I use Safari?

    Never mind! :)

I shouldn't close the tab, but it's just what I'm used to doing.

Thanks. Sorry for not replying straight away.....my connection failed!

I was going to say, why close the tab, why not just click on the tab you want, or the back arrow?

Apologies for being dense about this, but since people have been mentioning this difficulty, I've been rather puzzled!

But, then it wasn't until recently that I realised that I could actually use voice commands to input words onto posts! I hadn't turned Siri on, you see, so I didn't realise that voice input was a 'thing'! :rotfl:

The 'issue' is that if you're here, reading this, and there's a link and you click it .... it's nicer for it to open in its own/new tab, so you can see this page and that one.

It might be that you want to keep that tab open, to read in a bit.... and/or when you've clicked the link you're irritated by the content and wish you'd never clicked and now you have to go back (and wait for the page to reload) ....

It used to be that if you click on a link you stayed here -AND- a new tab opened where the page the link went to loaded.

I like to open new tabs with new sites/content, so I can then choose whether to read it now or in a bit. If I'm in the middle of reading stuff here I'd prefer to get to the end, then to investigate any links I clicked, a bit later.

Suddenly being taken from here to a new website is not what we want and it's changed .... and we don't like change. We didn't ask for change, nobody asked us, it just happens .... so we're annoyed.

    :)

    That's all.

Pysis You're right, we can (and now should) click on the Back arrow, but we've been used to just closing the screen (Window) with the link on it, as links used to open up in a separate window which appeared in front of the one with the Forum in it, so after we'd looked at the link, we just closed that Window (screen) to get back to MSE.

But now, links appear in the same Window, so if we absent-mindedly click on the Close icon rather than the Back arrow it closes MSE down altogether. Then , as GDB says, we curse (or at least say "Tch!") and have to navigate back to the Forum.

Does that help? Apologies if you're now even more confused :o

Right, I'm going to wash my hair or I just won't get around to it :)

Ah! Perhaps that's where we're talking at cross purposes!

I remember when I had an iMac, yonks ago, that I could see two pages at the same time.
However, that doesn't happen on my iPad! If I click on a link, new tab or no, I just go to that page, which fills the screen. No split screen viewing!

If you're all talking about side-by-side-page viewing, that doesn't happen with me!

Ummm,...........see my post which crossed with yours!

Maybe I need a desktop computer to really understand what's going on here, although it does revive a few vague memories of the old iMac days!

I've never ever had a PC! Only ever had AppleMacs! :D
