On a lighter note trying to build a carport at the moment for my new auto car... but weather is too hot but only until Sunday phew...upper 30's is not happy temp and not expected now but at least we have the dip pool and the house is cool with 20inches of thick walls ...heaven indoors though so sewing and repairs getting done now so not that bored....BW Dianne

If it helps, you can build it at my house and take it to yours once it's built.

Yesterday was superhot/sweaty, then it rained, then there was thunder; it's rained overnight. This morning is "flat and grey atmosphere" and an air of "nothing". Temp gauge says 78-79 but it's not humid.

Yesterday I tried to get a through draught by opening: 1st floor side bathroom window, kitchen window at the front, side window in living room, patio doors ... and still it was oppressive, so I went and had a bath to cool down instead.

In all seriousness ... compared to my dad you could put me on the scale as a 1/10 ... dad was definitely 10/10 for non-PC.

I couldn't even type what'd be typical behaviour for him as I'd be booted from the forum.

None of it was racist/hate, simply the way he'd learnt/been taught by the telly and society, to behave. He LOVED the black and white minstrel shows and wouldn't hesitate to talk in a pseudo/black/American-Southern/!!!/black and white minstrel voice if he happened to see a black person in the street .... not racist, simply surprise at seeing one and had a need to "say something" to mark the occasion :)

    :A :A :A

I'm laughing with you, not at you. :)
    It's good to laugh! :)

Last night I decided to plot out my half-furrin tree, including the odd bit with the beheaded chap on it - I figured I'd chuck that in just for good measure, while I had the information to hand. Marked on the chart as "completely unverified" although the source is 'solid/sound' but doesn't provide their sources or evidence they didn't make it up.

And, I've already, this morning, discovered a relative (grandfather's nephew) who was sunk on a ship in WW2 and has his name on a panel at Tower Hill. He left widow/2 kids - about 20 miles from me ... and the kids have the potential to still be alive (aged about 80).

I am always amazed at how the tree shows you how chance/random your existence is.

If a chap hadn't had an affair and left his wife 160 years ago I'd not be here, for example.

In another of my trees, if a man's wife hadn't died he'd have not married my G-gm and then if he hadn't died my G-gm wouldn't have been exactly where she was at the time she was to get up the duff by some chap. If she'd married somebody else who had lived she'd have gone and had his kids, not tarted it about down the village.

It's bigger than that. What if your dad/brothers had an illeg child? Or your mum's sister had a child given away and hushed up?

I suspect that it will end up as per Spirit's post where someone is closer to the deceased.

I wouldn't have minded getting the family tree that they send you. Can't see me ever getting into plotting my own, but having one done, even if it only goes back a couple of generations, appeals.

I found mine on a website. Connected to it and the creator turns out to live about 10 miles away. We are 4th cousins twice removed. It was a bit of an anti climax; you think to develop an interest and the solution is presented to you, neatly laid out back to 1850 or so.

There is a Jewish tradition of placing a small stone on the grave stone of a deceased person when you visit. More info here on the background to it.

My grandfather was a quiet guy, had lost touch with most of his family and virtually all his friends were friends of my grandmother too. When visiting his gravestone there were always piles of stones on his gravestone, we could never work out who these people were. My grandmother would have a sweep clean quite often, but never indicated she knew who may be visiting. When she passed away and was buried next to him, the stones continued on his, but hers didn't have more than expected. Always wondered who these mystery visitors were.

    Secret admirer(s)? ;)

    That's nice custom, though! :)

Edit. Going back to Pasture's randomness of existence reminded me of various sci-Fi stuff I used to read in the 70s and 80s, inc. Asimov, Heinlein, etc., plus I think there have been a couple of films since on the same theme, namely, that 'predestination' dictates things, and even if you go back in time and make different decisions, you'll still end up in the same place/job with the same wife and children, etc.

I suppose it'd save you having regrets!

In some ways it's sort of right, namely, that however much you change the physical aspects of your life, you're still the same person with the same tendencies, likes, dislikes etc., and we do all tend to repeat behaviours.

Someone once researched into the happiness aspects of winning tons of money, and it showed that people who were fundamentally unhappy before the windfall, once the euphoria of the win had worn off, were still fundamentally unhappy!

And people who had had disasters, like health, amputation etc., eventually reverted to their happy selves, despite their misfortune.

    Interesting.

Be funny if half-cousins appear out of the woodwork. But very unlikely, he was a solitary guy. Almost surprised he ever married. His mother died when he was young, his father remarried someone not much older than him and he ran away to join the navy. He got married just before the war. So really wouldn't have had the opportunity to cultivate admirers.

They could have been very secret! ;)

Or he could just have a common name and be the person with that name buried closest to the entrance to the graveyard....
    I think....

This morning's repeat heirhunters was a young guy, popular and very well-known in the music scene.

It turned out he was an only child and his parents had died by the time was about 9, he'd gone to live with some cousins and things were "OK", but as soon as he could, he left home and never contacted them ever again.

So, as a "youngish man" nobody would ever go round looking for his death.

The other case this morning was a woman (~90) who was an only child; her mother had died in childbirth in 1929. Easy to see how she could've fallen out of touch with any relatives.
