Digital thermometer indoors (patio doors have been wide open for 2 hours) is 82.4F/28C.

I've kept my side-window blind shut and kitchen blinds (for later when it gets round there).

It's a bit breezy though - opened the bathroom window upstairs to get/keep a through draught.

Nice. I think we got 24C today, that was the forecast this morning anyway. It's getting cooler now but I've still got the doors open at 6pm which is nice. Winter's back tomorrow apparently.

I've heard that hot drinks actually work to cool you down? I'm sceptical. All it does is steam up my glasses and draw a few more beads of sweat.

Apparently there are a couple of arteries that pass through your neck (?), one carrying cool blood to your heart the other warmer stuff from your heart.

Supposedly, I think, a warm drink makes them move closer together so cools you down.

No idea if that's true or not, I heard it years ago.

I always thought it was because hot drinks make you sweat, which cools you down as it evaporates off the skin.?

For all I know, drinking a cuppa could summon Lord Assam, God of Tea in the Heat who waves a fan in your rough direction.

Your explanation sounds better than mine. I'm changing my mind. :)

What DOES work is to run your wrists under cold water. 2-3 minutes of that works. Your wrist is where blood vessels are close to the surface, so it's the quickest way to directly cool down the blood.

I believe the "hot drink" thing makes you sweat more - and sweating is the body's way of getting rid of excess heat. Thing is, if you're hot, the last thing you want to do is become sweatier to feel cooler.

Another way to cool down is to wet a face flannel and lay it over your head/face ... so long as you've not been to the hairdresser and got full make up on in an important meeting.

TBH, when I want to cool down I put the air con on. Works every time. It's great, a continuous blast of cooled air that may well be 20C cooler than the ambient temperature. Begone 40C+ days, welcome to Generali's 22C house.

    That probably wouldn't stop me!

Fans are on here, air con seems a bit over the top in the UK, although that's just to keep the dog cool. I've been outside gardening and cleaning the car.

Walked the dog earlier today as it's now getting too hot for him, even though we've shaved off a lot of his fur already.
