Hi all. been away for ages. Hope me old mates are doing good. Settled into retirement. Still not moved to Reading due to various health problems. " major surgeries but fine now apart from gaining to many pounds ( stones ).

Not sure if you recall but bought into my sis in laws house due to the leaving of her hubby. If we had waited we would not have afforded it. From the horses mouth I can tell you that in under 3 years the house has gained an obscene amount of cash. Not good on the youngsters in my family at all. A couple of them bought before this recent explosion. However the others are paying rents that are dumb.

Well looking forward to the move. My place of birth and what a change. However Berkshire is still lovely and living by woodland is just amazing.

So what next .Once settled in I am looking for volly work and if something I fancy comes a long maybe some part time work. Have just bought most of the gear to start a small recording studio in the garden. Good old ebay . Got some lovely gear at an mse price.

Anyway, looking forward to catching up with you guys.

I have a falling-to-bits copy of a "Peacock" paperback called "The King of the Barbareens", written by Janet Hitchman who was brought up in Norfolk.
She mentions that her grandad used to knit "ganseys" for her and that they could stand up all by themselves because the oiled wool was so stiff :D Her parents were dead so she lived with her grandparents, then when they became too infirm to look after her she was fostered, and then went to one of those servants' training schools PasturesNew mentioned. It was called Anguish's and was in Norwich. After that she went to the Barnardo's village at Barkingside in Essex, seemingly because the authorities decided she was too bright to settle for being a servant, and won a scholarship to the High School.

The book is in a sorry state - it was secondhand when I bought it - but I won't part with it because it's out of print now. It's fascinating because it describes a way of life that's long gone.

There's a copy for sale here if you want a back-up!........

I reckon it is lucky my life is so dull otherwise no doubt I would have been 'Pasturised' (a bit like being 'Antrobused' but in 100x as much detail).

I wonder what info she has on the more interesting NP like LIR and Gen?
    I think....

You quoted an ISBN recently (maybe want to delete it?) that relates to what is now a suburb of Cambridge, but was probably more of a village at the time.

Not that I'm stalking, but I was interested to see what you had bought. I find these old photos really fun. This was our local underground station just before it was built, in 1904:

And here it is 6 years later, once the railway had come (not all that much different from now, really).

This actually really annoys me - not the building of Barnet but that the people who live there no doubt fight tooth and nail against any new development in the area or nearby and can't see the irony of that position.....
    I think....

    Yes.

Whenever I rail against yet another big house, (which is already converted into flats), being pulled down and a new block of flats built in its place, or as now being discussed, the use of greenbelt land for new development, I think about how awful it must have been for so many people to see the vast estates of 20s and 30s houses going up on fields and woodlands between the wars, and then again in the 50s.

(See the R.F. Delderfield series of books).

I bought a rather nice book written by my optician and asked her to autograph it. I didn't tell her the price. Same as that one.

    This book. https://www.amazon.co.uk/India-Britain-Kusoom-Vadgama/dp/0947728031

I seem to have made a profit of 15600%! :rotfl:
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Might be wrong, but I think you can only tune into a different TV region if you're near the transmitter boundary.
