Building is a real PITA for the neighbours. I live in a road with just under 20 houses.

One house has the builders in. Fair enough. It's just a skip in the drive and a bit of coming and going.

Three others have major development work under way. One of those has been completely demolished and they've dug a 15 feet basement over a large part of the site. That involves loads of digging and 30 ton trucks driving over the pavement. I say over the pavement, but I really mean through the pavement, as they churn it up. Plus the cement lorries and cement pumps.

So, I can't even take the dog for a walk round the block.

The other two have demolished around one-third of the house, and it's slightly less obtrusive.

    I haven't mentioned the noise, have I?

But in reality people don't want to have to do all that, they would rather buy a ready built house or a plot to have their design built on and they could then sell their old house to someone who wants a house the sise it currently is but of course whilst in the 30s, 50s and 60s we felt farm land was less valuable than houses for soem reason now we have changed our mind.

Give or take a bit, houses round here sell for £800-1000/ sq ft. Building costs around £150-200/ sq ft.

So ... well I don't need to spell it out.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Might be wrong, but I think you can only tune into a different TV region if you're near the transmitter boundary.

You should be able to find other areas, usually much higher up the numbering. eg my local BBC1 is at 101, BBC1 Wales is on 964 Freestat/ 952 Sky/ 864 Virgin

Oh, and there are 2 houses for sale in the road, including our next door neighbours, who have planning permission for a full demolition and rebuild job, including a 15 feet basement less than a metre from our house.

Too right I'm against development. Buy your house and live in it. There's no need to make it into a building project.

If that was happening to me, I would get a full structural survey done on my place before they started building work. Just to establish a base line.

I like normal food and ponced up food.

It's probably fair to say that I like food.

I've been driving to work along the Surrey /SW London border and there is a staggering amount of renovation/extension work going on in an amazing number of roads.

I sometimes wonder why nobody just builds houses the right size to start with. This surely doesn't happen anywhere else in Europe, does it?

If science made eating unnecessary somehow, I'd probably just still do it as a hobby.:D

Aussies extend their houses, most often by putting a second floor on.
